Hi guys,
I notice that the 6400 and 8500 Ballistix 2Gb kits are both priced the same.
I am looking at getting some to replace my current G.Skill LA DDDR2-667 set (it's been a good clocker, but will not go over DDR2-800).

Any reason not to purchase the 8500 set in favour of the 6400 ?

Will be running this on a P5b deluxe...

bought the 8500 chips the other day -painless install and so far working fine (although not stress-tested with Orthos yet) @ 1020 CAS5 @ 2.1V.

good memory.

Mark.

:) anyone know how well the P5b deluxe board copes with these chips at the stock 1.8VDimm setting ? (I remember reading about all sorts of problems a few months ago about stock SPD/VDimm settings not being read properly)
Just want to make sure I can at least boot with them so I can then raise the speed/spd in the bios.

answer is "YES" - well I think so anyway.

before I installed the RAM in my P5-B Deluxe - I set everything back to AUTO, FSB, memory speed, all voltages etc - and machine booted fine.

This is with latest bios (11.01) - not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Mark.

Reset your RAM overclock back to Auto and they'll boot at their default 1.8v spd speed, which is probably 667mhz 5-3-3-12.

You can then set the 1066mhz settings manually.

even with the P5B - is it OK to just set 2.2V for 1066 or thereabouts?

(I'm so used to 1.95V max for my Corsair stuff LOL !)

thanks, Mark.

Yea that should be fine.

Let me tell you something, my crucial anniversary's albeit being a little bit more special they're in essence very similar chips. I managed over 1000mhz on stock volts. They're PC5300 too :)

Have them at 800mhz 4-4-4-4 stock volts 24/7 atm

Sucessfully ran my ballistix up to around 1200 near abouts 5.5.5.15.

Also ran them at 1000 4.4.4.12.

Currently running mine at 900 4.4.4.12.

PC5300 very good bargain ram that delivers...

not having much luck with my new Ballistix 8500s - perhaps I should have got the 5400 stuff LOL !

best I've managed so far with my P5-B Deluxe is 1028 CAS5 @ 2.2V

1066 @ 2.25V is a no go - Orthos lasts 40 seconds :(

won't do 930 CAS4 - 2.25V either.

:(

well 1028 is not a disaster :)

just was hoping for more...

I'm sure they would go higher with more volts, but I've heard 2.3V + is not really good for Micron D9 chips ?

Yes but aren't they rated to work at DDR2-1066 CAS5 @ 2.2VDimm ?

I would send them back if they are not obtaining the correct rated speed.

Tried SPD settings and manual.

Should we definately go manual and if so - what would you suggest ?

I think I tried 5,5,5,18 and the TRC @ 20 - this all at 2.25V (no 2.2V on P5-B)

thanks, Mark.

Try this Mark :

(in the order it appears from top to bottom in bios screen, i'm assuming you are running a bios equal to or later than 0804)

5,5,5,15,5,35,3,11,5,13

static read control disabled

I have noticied that the P5b seems to have problems setting the very last 4 SPD settings (the 3,11,5,13 values) - It seems to leave them all at the default of 10 which can cause issues (for my current G.Skill chips anyway)

I used the windows memset tool to find out what the values should be when using auto SPD and then used manual SPD to fill them in.

thanks - will try that.

let me know how you get on with yours when they arrive.

Have to say even though not meeting rated (yet) - far better than my Corsair 6400s were - which managed 830.

So far they have run at the 1028 for 1 hour Orthos with no problems (running in the background)

Mark.
