Ballistix query.

thanks - will try that.

let me know how you get on with yours when they arrive.

Have to say even though not meeting rated (yet) - far better than my Corsair 6400s were - which managed 830.

So far they have run at the 1028 for 1 hour Orthos with no problems (running in the background)

Mark.

No probs. I'm just hoping for DDR2-920 CAS 4 so that I can bump my fsb up to 460 to get my [email protected]ally managed to get my E6300 up to 420fsb last night, and all at a VCore of 1.25V (1.2 under VDroop) - think I have myself a nice E6300 here, I just hope I dont come up against an fsb wall with it on my way to 460 !

or perhaps its me !

I have 1 120mm fan at front of case and one at rear - and up till a week ago one on a side vent too (I have one side panel that has a 120mm fan and one that doesn't) - I swapped last week for the one that didn't have a fan on it to reduce noise.

CPU temp didn't go up by more than 1 degree - and pc was still stable so didn't think any more (Orthos stable too)

Just opened up PC to check RAM was fully inserted - and found the RAM was warm - not concerncingly warm - but warm none the less.

the northbridge heatsink was a different matter ! - was just about touchable ! so rather hot !

I've put the side with the fan back on (it does almost blow directly over the heatpipe heatsink on the P5B.

Orthos was still unstable - but managed 15 mins this time vs best at 1066 before of 2 mins so could well be heat related ..

Mark.

well much better - but still not totally stable @ 1066 MHz.

without side fan - Orthos stable 1 min 45 seconds !

with side fan - stable 1 hour 5 mins

well not there yet - but definate improvement.

this is with SPD AUTO settings, your setting were appreciated - but it only managed 15 minutes with those ones.

cheers, Mark.

you cannot be sure that it;s the memory 'bumming' out.
it might be the northbridge (as you do explain it's getting real hot)
what FSB are you running ?
the P5b slackens timings after 401fsb (therefore the region 370-400 can be problematic due to tight timings in this area).

very true - 401fsb + on my P5-B D is a no-go though - sometimes won't even post 401+ fsb !

well currently testing RAM at 890 CAS4 - as I can't get anything 1020MHZ CAS5 stable for more than 1 hour :(

will be getting my modules on wednesday, will let you know how I get on mate.

thanks

think I'm going to have to RMA mine to Crucial :(

just ran a suite of memtest86 tests and will not get past about 7 minis (either fails during test 6 or 7 with lots and lots of errors)

I've tried lower CPU clocks- makes no difference.

I've tried Manual and Auto SPD, and I've tried 2.15, 2.25, and 2.3V

:(

Mark.

RMA'ing the Ballistix :(

did some experiments with memtest

1 module only installed:

1066 @ 2.25V - memtest passed
1111 @ 2.25V - memtest passed :)

with 2 modules fitted

1111 @ 2.25V - memtest actually hung (first time ever for me)
1066 @ 2.25V - lots of errors in test 6

so its being RMA'd direct to crucial - presumably this is the right course of action ?

Mark.

yes it is
they swap your ram quickly
( if errors are found, of course) :)

Yip phone or email Crucial for an RMA number, post it to Scotland tomorrow and you may have its replacement back before the w-end.

Easy-peasy.

Let me tell you something, my crucial anniversary's albeit being a little bit more special they're in essence very similar chips. I managed over 1000mhz on stock volts. They're PC5300 too :)

Have them at 800mhz 4-4-4-4 stock volts 24/7 atm

i've got 4GB of the crucials at 4-3-3 830mhz 2.025v ....you shouldn't be smiling just yet :) :D

good luck with the RMA Mark.
It's nice knowing you only have to post it to Scotland, and that Crucials RMA turnaround is supposed to be quick and efficient.
I mean this in a good way - but i'm glad it turned out to be just a bad module, as I had fears that these PC2-8500 modules would turn out to be a bit 'tripe' !!
:)
