Ban on smoking in the street, Suggested by Leicestershire Council

Erm, no. You can't smoke in any public enclosure (must have three sides and a roof although there are loads of exceptions such as bus stops and train stations).

I meant peoples houses actually, I'm aware of the bus stops etc :)

No...it shouldn't be banned.

BUT, you should have fixed penalties for people littering with Cigarette ends and getting away with it...it's sickening to be honest, looking outside companies to see 3000 fag ends piled up in the corner of a flower bed...or along street curbs.

Other countries do it, so why don't we.

Well, I think chewing gum is much worse, at least fag buts do decay after a short period of time where as chewing gum stays for ever it seems.

Ban chewing gum I say.

I always throw my butts (ooh err) down a drain or in a ashtray.

It is in some places :p

It can take ages for Fag ends to decay as well actually, that's like saying apple cores decay, So I'll throw my lunch on the floor when I eat it outside.

Ask any smoker, "do you flick your butts" and they will always say they find a bin or stub them out and put them back in pack etc.

Watching smokers shows the reality, they throw their ciggy butts on the floor without a second thought! Obviously it's always somebody elses problem, they should be more bin, more people to pick up my butts with the amount of tax I pay etc. etc.

It's just a filthy habbit and the sooner it's banned other than in the home the better.

Very true.

Used to drive me up the wall when I was working for the BBC. They set out smoking areas and provided picnic benches, shelters and bins; and still people couldn't even be bothered to reach out two feet to a bin.

I would agree more with fixed penalties, if there were more cigarette bins around!! (in the centre of Leicester there are about 6 bins or so, well there are more [but hardly any], no where near where I work)

So what - you chose to smoke its your problem to deal with - yes they should introduce more bins if there is a lack of them though the lack of them isn't a reason for not being able to introduce fixed penalties. Should definitely introduce fixed penalties for people who mindlessly discard fag butts on the floors - tis disgusting - ditto to ***** who drop chewing gum.

Its just lazyness, just because there isn't a bin within 5meters of you doesn't mean you can simply chuck your litter on the floor.

Ah here we go let's justify one bad behaviour by finding another

hang on a second.. since when do smokers need to justify smoking? unless you're specifically mentioning dropping Cig butts, in which case snakedoctor has as much right to whinge about chewing gum..

eh? The same way any fine is enforced, with a ticket saying 'x' amount to be paid.

Same as urinating in the street fine is enforced.

Around here the "litter police" are nothing more than council employees, and as such some jumped up civil servant in a day-glo vest has no legal right to detain you and ask you your details.

Isn't Urinating in the street a public order and therefore dealt with by the police? Not a day-glo council official with a clipboard.

My parents taught me that if you had any rubbish and there are no bins then you take it home with you, that's what I'm teaching my children.

Now smokers aren't children but they seem unable to follow a simple concept that a 3 year old can take on board.

He was talking about the littering of Cigarette ends actually.

If people want to smoke let them smoke, just don't blow it in my face :)

.....You answered your own question there.

I usually go outside with the smokers and no matter how many bins are provided the nicotine addiction makes them unable to put their fag ends in the bins.
I watch them standing next to a bin and throwing them on the floor - unbelievable.

Oh do be quiet - what a ridiculous statement. If people don't use bins, it's out of pure laziness, not some nicotine-induced whackiness

Next time I have a cigarette, I'll steal a car, and then blame it on the crazy nicotine high!

Edinburgh already does this.

I don't like walking in the street behind someone who has a smoke in their hand. the smoke blows in my direction making

1: my clothes smell of smoke
2: my breathing being affected as I don't like cig smoke
3: me wanting to throw qwerty keys in their eyes

Well of course it's laziness, he was being sarcastic, it doesn't matter how many bins you put out for smokers they will just throw them on the floor!

Fine them heavily I say but I'd prefer it was banned!

Post of the year - I'm saving that beauty.

Certainly one for the book ;)
