Bands that never *Quite* made it.

Teenage Fanclub - Around for years but never quite made it.

Sonic Youth - Thought they would be massive.

St. Etienne - My girlfriend loved them but they never became very big. Released some great songs that people would be going gaga over if released by other artists.

I don't think they really had(have) the potentially to be massive, but I always expected The Charlatans to be more successful than they were/are. They have a similar sound to the Roses and I don't see why they never managed to quick pick up the mantle and carry it forward. Especially considering britpop was very big in the mid-late 90s; although I suppose one could argue that there was 'too much competition'.

I'd agree with that, The Charlatans are pretty class though :D

I'm sat here watching a DVD of my favourite band. Well done you may say. The thing is, my favourite band never really made it. I think they are great, I belt out their tunes with gusto, and I will never get bored of them. Their music makes me feel good, or sad or whatever. They are brilliant.

That is, of course, MY opinion.

Now, I would like to know who your favourite band is that never *REALLY* made it to the big time but should have!

My nomination is GENE.

Brilliant band, Martin Rossiter is a legend. I've seen them 3 times in various places. They had a few top tens, but never really cracked the big time, and I think they should have done far better!

Who is yours? And why?

Paul

I once saw Gene live in support of the Bluetones at the Queen Elizabeth II Hall in London... not bad at all... Not 100% my cup of tea...but enjoyable none the less...

Immediate name that comes to mind of good and didn't make it... Anyone ever heard of Ezio? Their debut album "Black Boots on Latin Feet" was great...

Funnily enough I was thinking of making the same thread a few days ago. Gene to me seemed like a bit of a Morrissey rip off.

1. Straw - a catchy britpopy style band, fantastic tracks imo - youtube vid (not their best song but you can get a feel for the voice)

2. JJ72 - Their first album was great. - youtube vid

Anyone remember these?

Agree massively with this one, first album Goosefair is absoloutely brilliant, I wa fortunate to see them about 4 times live when they were around, certainly a band that should have made it.

Sad to see them go.

Babylon Zoo. I can only ever remember them releasing one song lol

infact, didnt the singer die shortly after releasing spaceman or something??

Thats a one hit wonder, they were hardly ever going to make it! Infact the only reason the track was good was for the 20 seconds at the beginning of the song.:p

I never understood why Interpol weren't (aren't ..) bigger than they are, but I think they will definitely grow in popularity with this next album!

The Wildhearts.

This band should be the biggest band in the world.
Why? - Take every major rock band/artist you've heard such as The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Metallica, Beach Boys, Hollies, Buddy Holly, T.Rex, Slade, Queen etc, mix them all in a big pot and you might get somewhere close.
I honestly can't think of one bad song they've wrote.

They would get my vote - so diverse, brilliant lyrically and Ginger has genuine stage presence. Shame they have a very large self-destruct button. I can't believe they couldn't sell out Newcastle Carling Academy in what was a home town gig!

Ocean Colour Scene are another band that I always say should have been massive. If you're lucky you might have heard "Day We Caught The Train" on the radio, but that's the only airplay they got, with the exception of "The Riverboat Song" (TFI Friday theme tune). Still have a large and loyal fanbase and some outstanding albums, anybody wanting to check them out should look into Mosely Shoals and North Atlantic Drift.

There are some bands that my circle of friends consider to be triple-A style massive that some people just haven't heard of too - so perhaps my perception of a "big" band is a bit off.

I saw them live in NY after all the hype about them and they were so so dull, I left before the end. Maybe it was just that night alone, but I doubt it their music is lacking that something special imo.

I just had a listen to them - I suppose technically they are competant and they can write songs but again I cant really see anything special, they seem a bit 'rock by numbers' if you ask me, a little bland. Sorry, thats just my opinion.

it was one of the best gigs I've been to in years. they were as tight as ever and the current lineup is sublime. completely spot on.

look out for new Ginger and new Wildhearts... ;)
