i have a few bank acounts, the one in question is my old one i have had since i was 16, a Visa electron (no overdraft), i only use it for my specsavers monthly contact lens acount thingy. i usually pop £40 in it every 3 months for my lenses.

problem is i totally forgot this time, and i got a letter from the bank saying they will charge me £35 on the 17th (today) for the problem, this was 2 weeks ago, so i popeed the £40+£35 in my account there and then, the 40 has now gone and i have got my contacts, but today i went to the bank around 9pm ish and the £35 for the bank is still there, should this not have came out within the bank working hours.?

just wondering if its still in tomowrrow can i just take it out as they said it will be taken today.?

thanks :)

I thought that if you went overdrawn the charge is taken straight away so I'm guessing that either they decided not to charge you since the account was kept in order (that happened to me once before) or that letter was to tell you to get your account back in order before a specific date or they'd charge you and since you did get it back in order then they probably stopped the charge (I'm just guessing on this one).

It's not halifax by any chance is it? If so they charge you another £28 on top of the £35 if you havent got an overdraft..

If its your first time then ringing up and apologising with it being your first time etc usually works (i even managed to do this on a 2nd time).

I'm surprised you were so willing to give them the £35 though without trying to get it cancelled? Their usually quite lenient.

ring them up and appologies if it's a first offence they will generally waive the fee, then contact you lens supplier and chnge where the money comes from so you don't do it again. Why would you have a bank account just to pay for your contacts?

Halifax charged me £70 last month for 1. Going over by £2 with a WH Smith purchase and 2. Not having enough to cover my insurance payment(I hadn't transfered money from my other account to cover it).

Completely gutted as it's skint me this month.

Manage your money better? If you know you have a regular insurance payment set yourself up so the money is transfered automatically or better still pay it from the other account.

I certainly admit that but it was a mistake and one I don't usually make. It's hard when you're paying £160 per month on car insurance whilst only earning a part-time wage. My student loan covered the insurance up until a couple of months ago.

Hence the reason I've been struggling. :)

I'm sorry to hear that, but if you are struggling then why are you paying £160 pm in car insurance? Get a smaller car and better policy?
I can't get a better policy, and I'm running a very small car. My 1 year NCB should come through in October so I didn't want to give it up plus I need it for commuting.

Anyway, my insurance troubles are off topic. :p

So i gave them a call this morning, and they said it came out overnight, so i complained about the matter and asked to speak to a manager, after a few minutes he decided since it was my first charge to refund my £35 within the next 3 working days...happy days :D

Why do you think you should get the money back?

Are you not aware of the stupid things they charge people for? Trading standards has deemed bank charges as unfair, and most people get them back if they complain enough.

Say you have a direct debit coming out, and you foret to put money in an account for it, banks will charge you £35 for a failed direct debit. What exactly makes them entitled to this money?

Every charge my bank has made against me, I have gotten back. The reason they still charge people is because a lot of people just accept it and pay up.

When ever I've rang my bank and moaned at them for them charging me, when I ask them, 'so what exactly is it that I'm getting charged for' aside from the initial reason such as 'failed direct debit' or something they have nothing else to say, admit it and refund me.

They don't just refund though, they refund and then act like I should feel privaleged to get my own money back like they're doing me a favour.

lol @ the deliberately unhelpful replies on this thread... why do you people do it? does it make you feel big?

bank charges are illegal. end of.

anyone in here sneering with things like "ooh you should handle your money better blah blah"... ugh...

seems the template for replies on OcUK nowadays is: <insert patronising reply> <add question mark at the end to make you sound that much more of a **** >
