Bank charge...

lol @ the deliberately unhelpful replies on this thread... why do you people do it? does it make you feel big?

bank charges are illegal. end of.

anyone in here sneering with things like "ooh you should handle your money better blah blah"... ugh...

seems the template for replies on OcUK nowadays is: <insert patronising reply> <add question mark at the end to make you sound that much more of a **** >

Erm no, they are not illegal. The challenges to them in the court system are whether they are unfair not whether they are illegal

Are they actually illegal now? I heard something about Halifax fighting a case in relation to bank charges, and if they lost then they would be deemed illegal and all banks would have to follow suit, but that's all I've heard (from a friend).

If you have multiple accounts just call them up and say that you forgot but as this has never happened before then surely they could have contacted you to get permission to get the money from another account?

This happened to me when I transferred money out of the wrong account and a direct debit went though. You'd be suprised how much of a difference a call will make.. they usually refund the charges :)

I've now closed all my accounts that I don't use, but if it ever happens again they'll call you up and avoid any charges in the first place.

If it hasn't been said they usually take them out when you pay your interest so end of the month. Gives you a chance to pay some money in for them to take.

As for claiming them back, as far as I know the case is still on hold, so at the moment no. Best to wait and see what happens.
