I would tell them about it - they might even be nice enough to allow him to keep maybe 5-10% as an honesty payment.
If he doesn't want to hand it back I'd advise him to stick it in a savings account for a year or so. If it hasn't been spotted by then he's probably OK.

Banks have systems in place incase he didn't know, when the figures don't add up they'll notice and they get the money one way or another.

even if they dont notice there is nothing saying that they cant claim it back 6 months down the line.

me personally would put it in savings for a year at least to see if they notice as it isnt actually your money

Seriously though... I would be very amazed if they didn't notice. However if it was me I'd probably just leave it there for months and see what happens out of curiousity.

They do, yes. So it would have had to been hit twice to make this particular error, which makes it very unusual.

Tell him to inform the bank, he may get a small amount of cash for his courtesy but i wouldn't hold my hopes up.
