Probe into jail attack on bomber

Details of the attack on Barot were subject to a news blackout
An investigation is under way after an al-Qaeda plotter who planned to kill thousands of people in "dirty bombings" was badly injured in a prison attack.
Dhiren Barot, 35, from Kingsbury in north-west London, had been serving life at HMP Frankland near Durham.

He spent five days in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary after the assault.

A news blackout was imposed for the duration of his hospital stay, during which armed police were present. Barot was returned to prison on Saturday.

The attack is now subject to an investigation by Durham Police and HM Prison Service.

Northumbria Police are not releasing details of his injuries, but they are believed to be scalds.

A security operation at the hospital involved armed police and the air support unit.

Barot's stay in hospital involved a major security operation

A police spokeswoman said the news blackout was aimed at protecting the safety of patients, hospital staff, prison staff and members of the public.

The Muslim Council of Britain has called for a thorough investigation of all attacks on inmates.

'Inmates' dignity'

Inayat Bunglawala, from the council, said: "There have been other incidents in the past as well, where prisoners have been attacked by their own fellow cell mates.

"It's vital that they [the prison authorities] investigate the attack... to ensure that prisoners, whatever they've been convicted of, are given basic safety and are allowed to pass their sentences in at least some dignity."

At his trial at Woolwich Crown Court Barot was described as a determined terrorist who prepared meticulous plans for al-Qaeda figures on a series of attacks in the US and the UK.

In the UK these included exploding gas tankers hidden in limousines, flooding the tube network and a radioactive "dirty bomb".

He was jailed for life, with a recommendation that he serve a minimum of 40 years, but this was reduced to 30 years following an appeal.

Inmates gave him a good kicking then poured a kettle of boiling water over him. What goes round comes round I guess! Notice also how the Muslim Council of Britian and probably other groups like Liberty are complaining about his lack of safety. What about the right to safety of the thousands he was trying to kill? And in all seriousness do you think the authoritys will really investigate seriously the attack and his safety?

This is my big gripe. Muslims protest over their veils being banned but when it comes to extremists bombing places you don't hear them complaining in the streets then.

Excellent. I really have no gripe with a man like that being kept alive solely to be tortured. When they think so little of human life, it's hard to think much of theirs.

To be fair, this is England, not some dodgy American prison and stuff like this shouldn't be happening (even though it's deserved)

My point is, someone who's only in jail for stealing some fruit or something is gona get mistaken for a terrorist/paedophile and get beaten the crap out of for no good reason if this continues

I believe he should be simply got rid of !

He and others like him have cost our country enough and are still costing us lots on a daily basis. Bump off all the serious criminals and put the money saved housing these monsters into the NHS.

I notice he's been moved to Belmarsh, where more of his mates are. Is it only a matter of time before we have separate prisons for Muslims?

What do you mean, if it continues? People being attacked in prison has happened as long as prisons have existed as far as I know.

Look, I hate terrorists as much as the next man, but I must say I find the apparent glee about prisoners throwing boiling water onto another inmate a little distasteful. Even if he is a wannabe mass murderer, we shouldn't be letting this happen.

He's having his human rights violated, but you have to wonder whether he deserves human rights when he plotted to kill so many people, and obviously had no respect for his planned victims' lives?

I also hate the current implementation of "yuman rites" law in this country, however I'm pretty certain that no matter what you've done, or conspired to do, you should not be subjected to attacks like this. I really hope the government wakes up and realises that they can't house Islamic extremist criminals with ordinary criminals, they must be segregated in a separate prison.

Can't remember now, sure I read it online though - maybe on Sky news. The OP has it in his post now.
