Basic cpu temp question

Don't know amd cpu's but 40c is fine for idle but ur not gonna be using it at idle so to test ur overclocked temp going to need to stress the CPU
use a program like prime95 to test both if ur overclock is stable and what temp go up 2

Your idle temps seem a little high however I could be wrong here as I don't run an AMD system... One of the AMD guys will confirm this for you. When Overclocking don't exceed 62°C and you'll be fine ;)

Thanks everyone.
Im using amd overdrive to overclock and atm its 200mhz more, probably gonna take a couple hours before it gets to a higher clock is it safe just to leave on while i go work?

I wouldn't leave it if it were me, hopefully a failed overclock at worst will blue screen and restart, however If something really isn't happy and locks it up whilst pushed too hard you could have it overheat.

If you were overclocking manually wvia the bios etc I wouldn't worry as you know how much you're increasing the 0overclock by. Doing an auto overclock and leaving it probably not reccomended.

Nope, overclocking is just the process of increasing the CPUs speed. You need to then test that by running a programme to stress the cpu to 100% load whilst keeping an eye on the CPU temp. Its possible that the overdrive utility is actually stressing the cpu as part of its process, thats easily confirmed by firing up task manager and watching the CPU usage graph.

Even once you have have got your overclock to a higher level theoretically you should always run something like prime95 for at least 6 hours to prove stability, (whilst monitoring cpu temp). Typically gaming won't max out your cpu at 100% on all cores for a sustained period of time, so is not a very good test method.

Ok my pc has crashed twice today so there must be something wrong with my overclock?
Just trying prime95 its been running for 10 mins and the temp started at 44c its at 58 already.
