Basic Skylake 6700K Overclocking review and performance.

I'm tempted to upgrade from a 3570k but not sure which to go for.

It's hard to look beyond the 5820k with its 6 physical cores compared to the 4 on the 6770k. Surely DX12 is going to make use of these extra cores.

What would 8 pack choose for a gaming rig?

Looks like better to keep my 4790K on z87 board. I was thinking of going for skylake and not upgrade my board to z97. I get 4.8 ghz stable anyway so not sure if any value in upgrading mobo only to z97. but good to know that world is still the same with skylake release ;-)

My x58 board broke so I couldn't wait 4 weeks for sky lake. Helped that many top end x99 boards were for sale for £100 to £150 in mm as well and 5820k on two and so was the memory.

MM sounds awesome! Only a billion posts to go.

he would go for 5820k no doubt, after the premoting and arguments for it :D

depends really, price-performace system skylake looks very promising with the Asus maxmus hero being £180. Im guessing the new 6700k will not be cheap so it may be worth getting a 5820k for the overall performance.

coupled with an atleast 4.5-4.7ghz overclock and if DX12 will make use of the extra cores, the 5820k will still be a better option.

Ok so my head is spinning. I'm running a 2500k with a 7970. I've started to do a little streaming and found the 2500k isn't up to the task so want to move to an i7. I'm also looking at going back to nvida on a 980ti. I would also like to get an M.2 drive. What would you guys recommend?

I could see the sense in buying a Skylake i5 6600k and a low-mid Z170 mobo for a budget conscious upgrade, for those with ancient gaming systems like mine, instead of buying for instance an AMD 8xxx system or an i5 4690 system.

Been looking at x99 myself the past few days. And now checking out the reviews on skylake. Seems x99 is the way to go for me.

Not sure on motherboard to go for msi or gigabyte.

Both are good but personally id go with EVGA, Asus or gigabyte. Msi are good but they usually dont come with as good features as the others, but they are still great boards.

I went with Asus just for the OC socket, and it looks awesome :D.

I'm in exactly the same boat at the moment so also looking for suggestions.

I'm still on ivy and this was my hope at finding something tasty to upgrade to. So basically Broadwell and skylake are just the usual minor changes? At least this gives AMD a chance to catch up a bit

as die size shrinks goes slower and slower amd catches up.
Zen wont shake the world upside down but be competitive which they need.
5820k with x99 seems to be the choice today

Fantastic read. Happy with my current system as is so wasn't intending on moving to Skylake anyway but, definitely wouldn't now. I can't afford an X system (nor do I really need it) so don't envisage a serious upgrade for a few years, at this rate.

I'm not taken by Asus due to things I've heard about there rma and warranty service.

This review makes the 6700k actually look quite good compared to the 5820k.

The gist of it is, single threaded performance the 6700k is way better infact the best. Multi threaded, it is only slightly behind the 5820k.

Are OcUk actually selling any LGA1151 coolers as i could see any online.

Very interesting, I noticed this too.

No expert, but I will argue for a gaming PC, the 6700k is the way to go.

Why? Base frequency and OC potential are higher on the 6700k rather than the 5820k. And to OC the 5820k you are pretty much going to need some seriously robust cooling.

DX12 is a little complicating factor as it does scale up to 6 cores (from what I've seen), however the 6 cores on the 5820k will be in generally of a slower speed and of a lower IPC than the 6700k.
