silly question but will this

work as a direct replacement for a laptop mechanical hdd that has died?

i don't want to buy it if it is the wrong physical size of drive to fit in a laptop

It's a 2.5" Drive , so I suppose it should

assuming the laptop is using the standard 2.5inch hard drive you should be fine. You may need a thin 'thickness' adapter in some cases though as some ssd's are slightly thinner than the hard drive.
