Bastion - action rpg

Had about 3 hours on it so far. It is good (and visually, it's gorgeous), and yes, the narration is amusing and will make you smile quite frequently, but I think it's been getting higher scores than it deserves (9/10 in Edge - really?).

Worth checking out, but it hasn't impressed me in the same way that, for example, Limbo or Braid did. Strip away the narration, and you've not really got much in the way of anything new.

Still, it plays well enough.

I found Titan Quest and Torchlight exceedingly boring, I'm guessing this won't be for me either?
Don't go thinking it's an RPG. It isn't. There's not really any inventory beyond the two weapons and special attack power you've currently got selected. Yes you can upgrade stuff, but it's no more complex than a shoot-em-up in that regard really, and beyond health and xp bars, there's nothing stats wise.

I heard about this on the Gamers With Jobs podcast, and was intrigued (especially by some of the music they played). The demo is very impressive in a quirky kind of way. The narration really does add something unusual to the gaming mix.

But I think this is another title to add to my bargain hunting list. I'm sure I'll play it for a few hours, then -- like with so many other similar indie games -- never quite bother to get back to it. So I want to pay half price for the half a game I'll probably play. :-)

The narration is the game's pièce de résistance really, and the reviews have raved about that far too much and failed to notice how the core game really isn't anything special.

It's solid enough, and I don't begrudge paying the asking price, but it's been hyped up way too much. If the demo slightly intrigued you, then yes, wait for a sale.

I agree with Fluke on this one. This is an action game, pure and simple. There is no real justification for classing it as an RPG any more than you'd class something like Mario an RPG. The narrator is pretty much the reason it was classified as an RPG and that's just not enough in my book.

As an action game, it's pretty good in all fairness, everything runs smoothly and works really well. The graphics are pretty, the sound and narration are really good and fit the game well, however having completed it last night I'm left feeling a little let down.

The difficulty in the game doesn't come from puzzles or mechanics where you need a certain weapon or item to continue, it simply comes from mob waves. There are ways to make the game more challenging, but they are based around buffing mobs more than anything else.

The weapon system is cool, but you'll find yourself replacing a highly upgraded weapon for some rubbish new weapon without choice, which ultimately makes certain parts of the game really annoying. There's nothing worse than being used to DoT damage from shots, only to have your weapon replaced by something less powerful which you then have to struggle with until you can change it.

All in all I felt a little let down and it's mainly due to the hype surrounding the game. This isn't a GOTY by a long stretch. As I said before it's a really nice game and there's no major flaws in it, it just didn't deliver on the hype for me and by the end (about 6 hours in with challenges and a few major fails) I was ready to play something else.

All that said, if you like action games with some really nice graphics, sound and a few quirky additions like the narration, you'll love this. Just take the hype and reviews of the game with a pinch of salt.

I would have thought that this thread would have been a lot more active for such an amazing game!

I'm on my second playthrough now, and trying to get better with using the basic weapons with lots of difficulty statues:

... That **** was epic hard ... I like :D

I picked this up and have been playing it for a few hours now. It's a bit odd and the Fang Repeater drives me absolutely crazy with how inaccurate it is (I can't get more than 44 in the trial at the moment).

Apart from that it makes a nice change. Quite easy on the eye and I like my pet Squirt. :)

Liking the Machete, Bow and Squirt or Land Mine combination at the moment.

I got this over the Christmas sale. Can't believe I didn't get it sooner.

The narrator, art and soundtrack make this game for me. Just messing around on it now, trying to get achievements. Currently stuck on the final "Who Knows Where?" (the one you get after playing New Game +), with all 10 statues activated. Got to the last wave, but got steamrolled.

Piano, you'll smash most of the challenges once you get full upgrades. Regarding the Fang Repeater, I think I opted for increased clip, faster reload and homing bolts and it made the challenge trivial.

I opt for the Brushers Pike (insane melee damage) and Musket (aoe knockback) at the moment. The Revolver is pretty crazy when fully upgraded also.

Cheers... I decided not to activate the statue I came across, because at the moment it's mental enough!

I didn't realise you could swap mods as you wished instead of being stuck to what you chose until about 3/4 through. Quite a lot of the challenges become pretty trivial once you've modded your weapons. The Fang Repeater one is a cakewalk once you get homing shots and if you get the damage buffs for the Breaker Bow you can do it easily using regular shots, otherwise you'd of had to use power shots only.

I preferred the Hammer and Bow for quite a lot of the game on my first play. Bow is seriously powerful if you can get the timing down for quick power shots and if you've got the charge-attack mod for the Hammer, along with Armour Piercing, you can block, power up and 1-shot most enemies you come across.

Yea, great game, I absolutely loved it especially the narrator hehe but I have only played through it once but might play through it again seeing as I am bored.
