Battered Pork Pie...

Ahleckz I wish you treat yourself to a deep fat fryer.

Open chip pans, accident waiting to happen.

This is how I've always deep fried, as long as I kept an eye on temperature, have not had a single crappy thing happen with hot oil. :p

how do you do that? you use a thermometer and keep sticking it in every 2 minutes?

Nah, I deep fry chips and crisps in a pan. As long as you keep an eye on it then it won't turn into a fire. What creates fires in pans is over heated oil and water (for example in partially defrosted foods, chips, and things like that). As long as you don't add any of that then you'll be fine.
I've never had a pan fire in my years of frying.

Sonny, nope - Just common sense. I know when the oil is ready to be used by dropping a wee bit of bread in and seeing it 'sizzle'. If it gets too fierce I turn it down a bit. No need for a thermometer.

You will also note I had my wet towel ready in case there were any issues!

Sonny, what do you think of my pie? Are your family interested in serving it in their restaurants?

I had a chip pan fire, and I can tell you this...that single wet towel does NOTHING. The fire went straight through it, made a hole through a wet towel.

What the fireman told me afterwards...yes, 2 fire engines came lol is that you need repeat the towel tricks more than once, and keep layering it on!

As a Chef of 22+ years I think you should be publicly flogged in the street for devouring one of England's finest products.

Battered Pork Pie indeed.:p

I think Escoffier is turning in his grave.

(*mind you, I haven't tried one of course)

Most amusing :) Now I love pork pie, but I just don't know I could ever bring myself to eat a deep fried one.

Battered scotch egg was mentioned earlier, with a worry it might not stand up to deep frying. Well when you make your own you deep fry the anyway so I don't think you'll have any worries there. I could actually see me trying one of them... If you do make your own, also try panko bread crumbs for a coating, lovely :)

I'm not a big pastry fan and pork pies are one of those things I just stand. For me, battering it would just be taking the pee a bit.
