Battle of the GPUs: Is power efficiency the new must-have?

No it is not one or the other hence factual 4+4=8 is not subjective or objective its factual, subjective or objective can be used to determining if something is factual or not but once its determined its factual.

Subjective or objective if one has cancer because the signs can be many things, but once investigation has determined that it is cancer it is not subjective or objective, it is factual.

And that's all i have time for.

Subjective means study of the subject, objective means study of the object
If you dont know if you have cancer then it is subjective, once the cancer is confirmed and studied it is objective. If you dont know if you have cancer then it is not fact, if it is tested and confirmed then it is fact.

4+4=8 is objectively true, it is also a fact for the same reason, it doesnt change based on who the person is doing the sum, an object of 4 is always a 4
The problem with your example is that price, performance, "bang" are all massively variable based on WHO the subject is doing the calculation

I can alter the price depending on where I buy from, what vouchers I include or disclude, supplementary items required e.g. Power supply, these are all specific to the subject and not the object

Everything you are talking about is subjective

Now that i have the new CPU in i can now continue.

Yes they all have to be taken into considerations and deals can not be ignored, but the on average can not also, as i said twice already that the price set is subjective, which means depending where you buy from the same product bought elsewhere can end up being better bang for buck all of which is obvious.
Price to performance is comparative mathematical fact, whether people think the price is worth it is subjective.

Low power consumption is a bonus, the first priority of a gamer is performance, things like game vouchers, low power consumption are the icing on the cake.

Low power consumption won't ever be the deal breaker for the enthusiast or gamer, performance will always come first. If you look at a typical GTX 980 VS 290X, the GTX 980 is between 5% - 10% faster but is also almost 50% more expensive. GTX 980 uses about 30w - 50w less power use depending on load, but is it worth the initial 50% more outlaw in cost...

So what I'm saying is,

The whole package is what makes the 970 / 980 a good option, leading performance, full DX12 support, DSR, Physx, game voucher, low power consumption.

Power consumption alone will not make or break a graphics card. Performance is at the end of day the first priority, with everything else making it even more attractive to a buyer.

I try to look at things in a big picture mode and not a sole bias and if people can give me something objective to see from, I won't get huffy/stroppy and will take it on board.

Yet...

All this bang per buck talk is laughable. Sure you can do that but when we generally ALL own high end cards, that kinda kills that argument. You only have to look at some of our systems and see what we think of BFB lol.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate not everyone is the same and where we can save a few pence, that is good but high end card users need not apply :D

Definitely no big picture in your view as BBFB is a fundamental consideration in terms of' the big picture' for a larger user base than the balls out performance user base.

This thread has turned into a discussion about what is objectively better, be it raw performance, power saving or even price/performance...

Its ARBITRARY. I dont know why some of you even bother wasting your time trying to convince one another about something as subjective as this. The features and extras, be it games, lower power consumption, temps, sound levels etc etc should be presented in such a way that lets the buyer decide if its worth it or not.

Not everyone needs a 980 to game, i dont need a 290, a 7970 would be enough for me as i dont really play AAA titles or bad ports that require ridiculous GPU power. So why not just get the slower but efficient card? I know im being kind of hypocritical considering i will normally recommend the 290 over a 970 but im talking from an unbiased point of view and in reality they're about as fast as each other. Both having perks and downsides... Be it the bus width for 4k performance or quieter and cooler running on air...

Power consumption can be used as an argument FOR a card just as much as performance can, because for all you know said listener only has a 500w PSU and/or plays old games or low requirement games, which i understand because who would wanna dump a ****load of cash on a stupidly expensive card to play horrible ports with FPS caps like Assassins creed...

Is power efficiency the new must-have? Yes, if you have a low wattage PSU and cant be bothered with many of the newer games that require the best of the best. And you just want something that works.

@ Tommy, you need to read the whole debate and then it will make more sense. You are picking at points but missing others. Nice try though. :)

Edit:

Fair and very valid points Ranger.

GPU's and all other parts would have been power sucking monster by now but its down to EU and such that all things must be green.

I think that is a big part of why power efficiently became just as if not more important than performance

That is reason PSU now have to be certed, I had a model from USA that technically I was not supposed to use here.

Quite.

@Ranger, nail on the head.

Are we going to go down the route of reading again?-that didn't bode well last time for one of us.

It wasn't a try-more an observation, no point saying you are objective with the big picture when a few breaths before you were dismissive, you might kid yourself/devotees on, but it doesn't kid a lot of the others on.

You posted this thread, topic discussion is: Battle of the GPUs: Is power efficiency the new must-have?

Power efficiency can be broken down to power/heat/cost yet you are dismissing one third of the equation while stating you take into account 'the big picture' yet you put forward only 'part of the picture', why I called you out, nothing more nothing less. :)

If you stopped reading my posts with a dismissive POV before you have even read them, you might well see what I was saying. You seem to have an issue with me, which you are more than welcome to take to email, or the best advice is to ignore what I say. I have no interest in getting sucked into an invalid discussion because someone can't read what is what when I post and instead read what they want to read....

Everything is subjective when buying hardware, as disposable income comes into it. What features are wanted comes into it, what settings come into it, what games comes into it, what noise comes into it, what heat comes into it, what case comes into it, what PSU comes into it and probably a ton more. When I buy for myself, I go through all of them and decide from that. When suggesting for others, I try to base my own advice from the potential buyers POV, so in the realms of this thread, "Is power efficiency the new must have?" Not for me but could well be for others.

I am sure your disdain for me will find something up with that, but by all means take it to email if you have an issue with me, or try and read what I type and look from a neutral position :)

No issue from me and stop playing the fall guy card-not cool:rolleyes:, would bode well to take in some of what you write yourself.

Gone the mail route before, not to keen with what that entails going on past discrepancies.

It's over played into an issue in regards to bbfb when it's relatively simple, as is the rest of the points raised in this thread.:)

When people are placing their trust in our opinions, I don't like to waste their money on bad advice, so I try to look at what they want and what they already have. I have given advice more times than I could count and tried to be unbiased and objective for the buyers needs. You might consider it simple but I consider all angles.

I ignored the rest, as it is pointless talk :)

Nothing wrong with that.

When people are placing their trust in our opinions

Maybe refrain from walking in and poking the 'BBFB' opinionated with a condescending stick every other occasion?

Others have the same right as you to share their advice when asked too...

Then there would be less to n fro rabble to wade through.:)

Ok, show me where I have done the "condescending stick" that you speak of or have rubbished others opinions. I was having a good discussion (or thought I was) and giving my opinion (which I am entitled to) on the subject at hand.

I do find it funny BTW that time and again I have read that this supposed BBFB is the defacto but when nVidia do it, it doesn't count for toffee :D That's my opinion and doesn't make it right or wrong.

Edit:

In fact, are you not doing what you are accusing me of?
