Battlefield 2?

But that grid aiming system they had just made the combat feel like some kind of budget fps game with good vehicle combat thrown in.

Grid aiming? What does that mean? BF2 aiming and infantry combat is pretty much spot on for it's intended purpose; i.e. a partially-realistic but mainly arcade shooter. Aiming is in general fairly realistic imho (compared to games like OFP, Americas Army, Ravenshield, etc) it's the movements that are unrealistic, like no accuracy penalty when falling to prone, etc.

I don't like some of these "arcadey" aspects of the game, but then again they do make for some very fast paced, intense and what I like to call "ramboesque" infantry combat. Sure it's not realistic, but who cares when it's huge amounts of fun; either that or you simply aren't playing it properly.

You've never noticed in bf2 somethimes when you're using iron sights that the exact spot you want to aim on the mouse skip over it? I remember reading a while back that the aiming system for bf2 is weird as the screen is supposodly broken down ito a large grid filled with tiny squares and when you move your mouse it tracks from one square to the next. its not that hard to notice in bf2, especially when sniping theres occasions where the crosshair will sometimes go slightly left\right\above\below a target, and no amount of fiddling will get it centred on the target.

The game can be fun, it would be more fun if there was more to the infantry combat than people just flopping to prone as soon as they seen another infantry target. As i said before this games all about vehicle combat with infantry combat falling a long long way behind in terms of importance. Hard to define "playing it properly" when its one cheesy tactic that rules one aspect of the game.

Its pretty much been the same for most of the bf games, except for bf:nam where some of the guns were stupidly accurate from insane ranges, m60+law was another funny decision as well.

Dice needs to learn from bf2 and hopefully make bf3 a game where infantry combat is as fun as vehicle combat.

That's odd, I've never noticed that. The ironsights are pretty much pixel perfect for me and only limited by the accuracy of my mouse. With the L96A1 (most accurate rifle in the game) I don't have any grid aiming issues as you describe; even heads showing up as a few pixels can be aimed at with ease.

This is the first time I've heard of this, so it could be a problem with your mouse sensitivity issues or something in the mouse control panel in windows. Have you disabled mouse acceleration in windows? (enhance pointer precision box in mouse control panel). Also check out the "mouse acceleration fix" in google.

I agree with you, it has it's flaws, but the "cheesiness" is what I like about the game. It's over the top and ridiculous but it's still fun. The prone spamming thing is annyoing, I agree but even that can be turned to your advantage; in fact I love it when people prone spam, makes headshots a lot easier.

its too late to start playing BF2, because everyone out there is gone outrank you and you won't be able to get into those Lovely Apache......ZOOOOOOOOOOOMGGG!!! multi kill :P

Ive not played it in about 18months plus as i found the game to be really stale. At the time of release though i recall quite a few posts talking about the aim skipping around. A supposed fix was to lower mouse sensativity but of course nothing was ever done by ea to sort it fully.

Thread about it on hardocp here http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=923314

I didn't read specifically about grid aiming but I've looked up the hitboxes.
It can be a combination of the lag as well but I've emptied clips into people at close range without 1 connection

Hitbox example

i could never get used to the infantry combat in BF2, think its a lot better in 2142 :) minus the nade spam ofc... wish they would take nades out lol

Ya that got pretty bad with an engineer deploying an ammo crate. grenades just rained down on certian areas of the map. =/

Dice had some good ideas for bf2 to me it jjust seems some of them were given enough thought and ended up being a major annoyance.

I have mine set to 0.4 and seems fine to me.

hm, always was down to server you played on, i used to play 50k but not with any ocuk lot, sometimes it was ok, sometimes it wasnt. Problem was it used to crash a hell of a lot, decent server config was required for the game to be decent infantary play, otherwise bullet reg was a nightmare. Hated servers where people 'outflanked' the other team for back flags, not really outflanking, was just taking advantage of maps that are too big.

50k server i think i got banned from one time. Shot a plane down in gulf of oman, the plane debris crashed in their spawn with the 2 planes on the runway and killed a few people. Apparently i had this preplanned and got either kicked or banned.

I just remembered one of my gripes with BF2. But don't get me wrong, I still love the game.
Far too many servers play just Karkand. Karkand 24/7 servers are everywhere. I agree it's the best map but there are some other great ones that should be given more server rotation
Karkand, Karkand, Karkand, Karkand, Karkand,

Yes the Jolt uk 64 man server is the best at this moment in time, rotates the best city maps - Karkand, Mashtuur and the Road to Jalalabad, which I'm starting to really enjoy at the moment. Problem is its hard to get a space in the evening its always full.

Karkand can be too much 24/7 your right.

Right I'm up for some of this tonight, I'll see if I can get my install to run without much lag/crashing :p

Who's with me!? \o/
