Battlefield 3 Video Memory Usage

You're not getting the crashes anymore because you've probably corrected your page file settings.

It was to do with you until you edited your post out Matt :p.

And no, I would imagine Gregster's figures are from MP.

First thing first. Who to hell still uses Paging file ??
I dont have one since windows 7 came out.
And if you are having errors cos of it. Your windows installation is crap.

No, i tried various page file sizes before. The only one that fixed the issue was using an Auto sized page file.

However now that doesn't seem to be an issue when i use a small page file, i presume as im not running out of video memory.

Mate you weren't running out of video memory before :(. You may have thought the symptoms of it were but they weren't.

The issue you were having wasn't linked to VRAM as people were crashing the same way with 1.6GB usage. You're correct that EA may have fixed something as well though.

I'm just going on what the directx error said.

Not saying its right or wrong, don't care regardless.

It doesn't happen any more so that's the main thing, just used to happen with my 2gb cards.

Errors boxes are just whatever they're coded to say. A 580 running out of VRAM is more believable but not a 6950/70 or 670/680.

That's just the error i used to get but replace that with a 6950. It used to happen as the vram usage crept up to 1800+.

Maybe it was a game bug thats now been fixed, i dont know as i dont have a 2gb card to test it, but it was a real issue for me and many others that was only fixed (at the time) by having a system managed page file.

Yeah they've probably changed something. It just wasn't VRAM running out. I mean that's pretty clear - 1800MB still have 200MB spare...

I firmly believe it was due to a combination of Windows and BF3 and maybe some other unknown variable (as Tommy had the same set up and didn't suffer) causing the issue.

Who knows :D.

Agreed. :D

Now make with the damn screenshot for spoiling my thread. :(

Sorry, I forgot to say that vram usage was max reported in MP. ~1950 off the top of my head in SP 3D. what ever ultra settings are is what my settings were also. My frames were averaging ~50 at max settings in MP also, which in 3D felt judery but fine in 2D.

I just played 6 rounds of Armoured kill 64 man on my server. 1.8 gig vram usage at the end just before i quit, made sure i didnt alt tab once this time. :)

Just under 2.5Gb peak. BF3 just seems to cache a whole bunch of unnecessary stuff into the Vram, because obviously 2.5Gb is not necessary for a single 1080p screen- even with everything maxed out.

1500mb ono, 1920 x1200, ultra with x4 msaa, 16xaf, HBAO on and motion blur off. Gtx 670 at +120, +770.

Pointless thread. VRAM has been discussed millions!

No issues at 1080p on MP with all settings to the max. (2GB Card)

As others have said, just because it might report 2.5 gb usage doesn't mean it's needed.

I have seen 2.4GB of VRAM usage on a 580 3GB... my 670 2GB never goes above 1.8GB and gets much much better frame rates all round

even at 1440p full ultra, on SLI 2GB I never get dips below 60FPS

Sounds like gregster has closed the BF3 VRAM discussions once and for all.

Full settings (Ultra) @ 5760*1080 on MP running fine in 2GB with no windows page file.
Who cares what 3GB / 4GB cards use if 2GB has been proven fine at that high res!

/thread

How are you checking usage?

Just curious, sure I'm fine.
Also how do you disable Aero for Bf3 exe?

Just come back to pc after a 3 year console holiday, so way behind.
