BattleField 3 will not support XP

:)
Yeah but the game evidently still ran on older cards, it didn't flat out refuse to even run. Much as many games today have certain extra DX10/11 effects yet still run in DX9 mode.

(Radeon 8500 isn't even DX9 by the way, it's DX 8.1)

See above, it was pixel shader 1.4. :p

DD trust me on this it would not even get past the splash screen. There were some hacks but the textures were all ****** it was unplayable.

As Gerard says, it wasn't SM3.0 (few cards had that in 2005, if any?). It was PS1.4. IIRC Geforce4 Ti cards weren't fully DX 8.1 compliant, more like DX 8.0 and PS1.3. And it was controversial because Geforce4 Tis were still in a lot of gaming PCs in 2005 despite being a few years old. (nvidia's FX range had more features but little or no more raw power than the old Geforce4s did.)

haha I can't remember which (was never an issue for me) but it definitely meant people I knew had to upgrade due to a shader model requirement.

As above already responded previous page. The specifics are irrelevant, it was a hardware requirement that required an upgrade.

It would have had **** all impact over the life span of the game. Most people want an excuse to upgrade from 2 year old graphics and a HUGE title is as good as any. Now a ten year old OS :D

It did flat out refuse to run didn't it?

There was a big song and dance because it wouldn't run on a GF4 despite a GF4 being a well performing still, just one that only supported PS1.3

edit - nevermind, too slow :p

Okay but I maintain it was an odd thing for them to do back then. Imagine if they brought out a game today which didn't run on the Geforce 8800/9800/GTS 250 range - a card which is now a few years old yet still in lots of people's PCs performing just fine.

I see what you are saying but consoles have slowed tech quite a bit that's why those cards still perform so well. If there was a real CRYSIS 2 or BF3 that was ONLY for PC I am sure they would not run so well even if they were supported.

Be interesting to see just how much of a pc game BF3 is going to be. The amont of things that were missing and were broken on the release of bc2 was pathetic, and this is a game they streniously denied was a port.

The vehicles in bc2 all seem to have the hallmarks of a joypad derived control scheme, the way the helicopters handle compared to bf2 or bf:v is laughable, theyre so limited in their manouverability. Texture settings may as well not exist in bc2 as going from medium to high makes literally bugger all difference. Even down to things like the weapons models, compared to mw2 the ones in bc2 look very basic and lack any real detail.

Be nice if we get an actual pc game without restrictions left in place from the console versions but i really doubt it, a lot of the bf2 devs nolonger work at dice as they were hired from the desert combat team and sacked soon before bf2 shipped.

I guess what frustrated Geforce4 owners was that their cards were FAST enough to run the game just as well as the Radeon 8500/FX 5700, but the game had been deliberately engineered not to be PS1.3 compatible, when all other DX8 games were compatible with it.

All those cards were still pretty old and I have no doubt they were equally rubbish for BF2 (shader model difference aside). They would not have been running it medium/high frames with decent settings. Think I was running a 6800ultra and then went to 7800gtx just for BF2.

I am sure they had their reasons but even if it was backhanders by the GPU companies (which would have helped fund the game) then I can't complain. I loved BF2, easily my best online experience ... ever! So many happy memories playing with my friends, one of the last games we truly all worked together.

So a battlefield game will again force some to upgrade. Get with the program guys! XP is an old, old OS and it's dying! I had to buy a DVD drive for BF2 but it was worth it!

if they're moving to mostly 64 bit (and hoping in future to go completely to x64) then it make sense to move away from xp, according to steam stats less than 1 % of users have xp x64

No offence but being damn near broken on release is a requirement for any bf game.

BC2 was a damn sight better than bf2 and bf2142 were on release from what i remember.
