Is it important to watch the mini series before starting series 1?
I've started watching the first episode of the first series and I admit to being completely and utterly miffed as to what's going on.

You have to watch the mini series first tbh, it explains how the cylons attacked and who all the main characters are.

The mini series is great. But it is just a pilot movie/episode. It's only called a mini series as thats how it aired on tv in was it two parts?

Indeed. Without the pilot and being new to the story it drops you in the deep end.

You don't NEED to watch it but it helps you understand what's going more in the early stages of the program. If you chose to ignore the mini series you'll still get to understand the whole story through flashbacks.

(I watched it without seeing the mini-series first)

Damn, just talking about it makes me want to re-watch it for the third time!

Its a great show, might want to give Caprica a watch too although not nearly as good, its sort of a spin off prequel.

I loved it, its been a while I might watch it again, there is a list of what order you should watch it, including the webisodes and dvd-movies. Epic series.

One of my Top 3 TV shows EVAR. I've watched it twice in about 18 months, and somehow even the 2nd time through it I was still blown away by the story!

Mini-Series is a must though, its really the pilot.

Aside from babylon5, this has to be the best story based sci-fi series ever. Currently on series 3 (4th time of watching).

Each time I watch it I pick up on 'clues' that I never noticed before. For some bizarre reason it's even better when you know what is going to happen, such is the complexity of the sub-plots.

This is one of those series where you cant miss an episode.
I missed one episode because the dvd was scratched and it took me a while to figure out what was going on (I had to wiki it)
Its a great show and the first episode of series one is one of the best tv episodes of anything I have ever watched it really does keep you on the edge of your seat

There's a lot of filler in season's 3 and 4. Stuff that really could have been removed, but was put in at the behest of the network in order to capture new audiences who were put off by the arc heavy format of the first two seasons (there's filler in season two as well, but it's not so apparent - season one is by far the most condensed and focused of the lot).

But despite that, it's still one of my favourite shows ever.

Yeah it definitely began to tail off as it went along, but it was still brilliant. I know people always mention Babylon 5, but I genuinely think BSG is better. The plots in each episode are much more layered.
