BBC Gone Olympic Mad?

Another 2012 Legacy fact then - 118 schools have been allowed to sell off their sports playing fields since the Olympics. Again how does that fit with getting our young people interested in sport and fitter into the bargain?

All those sound bites we heard both from politicians and sports personalities at the time that 2012 would be the catalyst for getting our school kids playing sport again. Well not if we've sold their playing fields to developers we won't.

Presumably all these schools are run by money loving ******** who did it for a quick buck.

I mean that's my snap conclusion when presented with your detail trimmed fact.

Christ this place is depressing sometimes with the seemingly constant rallying against things that are monumentally popular. If you don't like the Olympics then don't watch it, it happens once every four years.

We've got all that "superhuman" Olympics to come as well...

I propose four olympics!

The Normal Olympics
The Paralympics
The Super Human Olympics - Any drug/medical procedure goes
The Just Not Very Good at Sport Olympics- For those that like sport and competition, but are just, well, a bit crap.

So how would you select this one, maybe a compulsory lottery, bit like hunger games

Could be super amusing

"And here is kevin smith represeting team GB, weighing in at 20st 3lbs 2ozs, climbing the 10m platform ready to do a triple summersault with twist in the pike position"
"and hes off.. OMG hes emptied the pool!" ;)

Or even better "here is nigel farage representing team GB at the all comers all weights boxing, representing team USA, mike tyson, a shock entry picked by the lucky ballot"

Perhaps you'd like to tell us how you spend your leisure time so we can make shallow value judgements too.

I do a hell of a lot of walking. I have recently just completed the Pennine Way and am heavily into watching wildlife and wildlife conservation.

Now I only work a couple of days a week (winding down to retirement) I often get up before dawn and make my way up onto the moors to watch the wildlife as dawn breaks - best part of the day.

I have also been taking photography lessons in the hope of taking good wildlife photos. However, learning how to compose a good wildlife picture is far more complicated than I would ever have imagined and I am finding it a bit of a struggle at present.

I realise this is not for everyone but for me it is food for the soul.

I watched the Girls Hockey final last night....I'm not a massive fan of sport...hate football...hate the premiership hate the culture...

But the hockey was one ...if not one ,of the most enjoyable, tense sporting finals I have ever seen...

I cried...

I would rather watch that than Mr Robot S2. The preacher, and other waste of time viewing persuits that neither entertain or connect with me emotionally...

Sounds wonderful and I mean that sincerely.

As it happens these are all things I like to do too, although I've not walked the Pennine Way yet. I don't have access to moors either, but I do watch and photograph a lot of wildlife where I live, go on long walks in search of photo opportunities, often lugging around a heavy tripod and photo bag. Usually try to get out several times a week to do this.

But I also like to sit on my sofa and watch the Olympics when they're on. Apparently this makes me a bad person who needs to get a life?

Perhaps you can see how silly making assumptions about people and value judgements are?

Agreed. That was thrilling. And earlier I watched Nick Skelton win gold and I teared up at that as well. to see a 58 year man who has been to the olympics 7 times and not won and this is his last try. He broke his neck in two places 16 years ago yet he still had the courage and determination to come back again and again and keep trying.

Exactly that...The sheer determination of some of these athletes is astonishing...

:)

Well, an enjoyable two weeks is over. The BBC did a great job with the coverage. Rio did a great job with the games under the circumstances and Team GB did fantastic.

A few weeks off and we get to do it all again for the Paralympics. September 7th to be precise - moaners mark your calendars :)

If it needs to be explained then you wouldn't understand. I'll go as far as to share this video that was recently posted on Facebook.

https://www.facebook.com/the18soccer/videos/985222541576754/

How about you show me the Olympian equivalent of this sort of behaviour? Actually, you probably can - it'll probably be from the Olympic Soccer players. :D

I was actually referring to how the Olympic athletes have to deliver 110%, otherwise they wont get their funding and sponsors. Unlike footballers that turn up half hearted and will get their 100/200/300,000 a week no matter what happens on the field.

You could say the Olympians are on performance related pay. They have to pour their heart into it even if they fail.

Probably watched more TV in the last 2 weeks than the last 6 months

Just a shame most of the arenas/stadiums weren't full as I would have had some tickets if it had been closer to home

You ain't seen nothing yet.

Paraolympics up next and it looks set to be the most awkward one ever for a basket of reasons.

As of the weekend that had sold 13% of the tickets. You can bet the majority will be for a small number of events the Brazilians understand so some events are literally going to be empty on those figures - embarrassing

I suspect it doesn't help the figures that by the sounds of it only one of the "in person" ticket counters was selling them.

Only one I watched is the hockey on the highlights. One sport I should have taken further
I don't like watching the sports I do (cycling, swimming, gym). But I'm not moaning as the pool is much quieter.
It's only two weeks and it is nice to zone out of the dreary day to day headlines for a while.

Football is my annoyance, but happily that's on sky now.

But I don't watch any TV anyway so it doesn't cause any disruption
