BBC iPlayer Beta Registration Open

you're not missing much. the "last 7 days" quote is very misleading. there's hardly **** all to download. :)
mines slightly different - not pc based so might be better

Just downloaded and watch the "Still Game" episode from last night...

Oh my gawd, the quality is very poor. But I suppose, they have had to compromise on the quality to get the file sizes down. If I record Family Guy on the DVD Recorder and copy the mpeg to the PC, it's around 360mb and that's just for 20mins.

Fairly happy with it for now, has worked ok (so far, touch wood!). Only gripe is I can't download the Top Gear Artic Special which I missed on the TV

Judging by the responses of those who have, I don't need to be in a rush to do so.

it's absolute tosh. i had another look this morning and you're lucky to get 10 programs a day. and they're mostly crap anyway - nothing i want to watch. there was one thing i was interested in but when i clicked it, it said this program is not available for download. wtf? then why list it you morons.... :(

It's a load of crap to be quite honest. Theres next to no programs, its slow to download, it uses rubbish DRM and the quality of the videos themselves is shocking

:(

You can remove the nazi drm protection the bbc videos use, allowing you to keep them forever and play them on any device.

It seems like this service is going to be a way for loads of people without a tv license to watch tv completley undetected.

Shame the bbc haven't heard of h.264 or vorbis.

you obviously haven't seen the selection of programs on offer then. i don't think anyone would even bother.....

When it comes to any of the bbc's current programs I wouldn't bother. :p

You get the license people hassling you though to come round and check if you are watching tv every so often like the third reich.

Right, just got the iPlayer installed. Found Top Gear - Polar Special. Its queued but doesn't seem to be downloading. Am I missing a trick or something?

You just need to wait ages now, probably about 24 hours going off my downloads
Or you could go grab the torrent and be watching it in 30 mins at a better quality :p

Hmm I know what you mean. I restarted IE then after a few mins it started downloading. I stupidly hid the download window, so now I don't know how fast its going. I can see the progress in the iPlayer window but having hidden the little box I don't know how fast its going.

Why can't I get that blooming box back eh BBC?!

to be fair, i've downloaded 3 programs now (doubt i'll even watch them :p) and they all maxed out my connection at over 700kb/s. but there's no speed monitoring in the app. i had to use a 3rd party tool to measure it..... :)

edit: i already posted this in the GD thread. what a geek i is. installing xp in a virtual machine just so i can use this.... :p

upload

Or you just edit the IE registry settings so that its user agent string says it's being run on XP ;).

If they had you wouldn't be restricted to the unholy alliance of IE and XP though.
