doesnt bother me as i already have sky and sports HD.

aslong as there are no adds im happy.

hope brundle moves over or the grid walks.

is there any mention of presenters etc for sky?

and hopefully practise will be shown on proper tv and not red button and i can record if i want to.

i suspect most in here who say "lol im not buying sky" will in the end.

the stupid thing about it is that bbc will have half the races, why bother showing half a season. and what races will they show and what not?

which i the only thing which counts. I'm wouldn't be paying for anything else. so its 10 races i would be paying for, hence divided by 10. even if bbc didn't cover it. That's still over £30 a race. would need like a 50 race season before it become reasonable.

How many games in a football season, just shown on Sky? I bet its a lot more than 10 or 20.

You're still paying for the 10 races, regardless of getting them free on the BBC.

This is what is annoying me. You're forced to choose who you're going to watch for the 10 'free' races, and let's be honest.. Why would you switch to the BBC for those?

You'd be paying for a programme you're watching for free (excluding tv license).

Do you think everyone has money to throw at it?
If it's availably on sky box-office, or they are all available on sky player. I'll think about it price dependent.
But won't be getting sky sports.

If this does go ahead and F1 ends up half on Sky, I can say with absolute certainty that at least 50% of you who are "outraged" and "adamant I will never get Sky" end up with a subscription and watch the races. It's so funny when the hypocrites come out to play.

They really won't, it's extortionate.

Nobody has £40 odd quid a month to splurge on Sky+Sky Sports just to watch the F1, they will have to make do with the highlights on BBC afterwards, plain and simple.

Not a chance. The value is terrible, so I really could not justify the expenditure, especially when I'm trying to save enough to start studying. I'll keep an eye on the results every now and then, but I don't see a point in sitting watching half of a championship. The only thing that would have a chance of saving this for me is if the BBC 'highlights' were just a delayed race, like they do in the US, but even that wouldn't be the same as watching it live.

I dont think you understand the full picture - F1 fans are already fed up with how Bernie runs the sports and the threats he makes about dropping this GP and that on his whim as it suits him. Why the hell would I be prepared to take the slap in the face and get a Sky Sports sub when he only just months ago said it would 'kill' the sport if Murdoch bought F1 and televised it on his networks.

Theres only so much bull someone can take...

I used to be a massive footy fan until it all went over to Sky, dont think Ive even seen an EPL match live since then and I havent attend a match in years now either - MOTD suffices to keep the office banter going. I dont have any issues with not watching F1 after this year either, SS is so down the bottom of my list of luxuries...

interesting discussion, in reality a small number will take up a sky subscription but the vast majority won't,

Personally I think it is a serious misjudgement by Bernie et al. The teams will go along with it, because they just want short term money. They think they are as big as football, but in reality they are no where near and viewers are their life blood.

I think sponsors will slowly leave F1 as it becomes less popular, money wise, the UK is a big market for sponsors.

How may sports are successful in the wider world (apart from the US) that are not popular in the UK?

You say that, but the BBC get 6-7 million per race watch F1. Surely that is a significant number, probably more than watch each episode of some gardening program.

Projected figures for sky are 1-2million per race

Figures from JA on F1
The teams are likely to resist any deal which reduces the audience number. Whereas the BBC currently enjoys audiences of around 6-7 million per race the SKY audiences for Premier League football suggest that they might get an F1 audience of around 1-2 million on their pay sports channel, far less when the race is also on BBC at the same time.

More from JA on F1

That's a nice chunk of money:

BBC staff at the Hungaroring are stunned by today’s news and have not yet been informed of the details of how this arrangement will work.

Whitmarsh confirmed that the teams were not consulted on the deal despite the fact that it appears to go against the Concorde Agreement and makes a mockery of Whitmarsh’s recent claim on the subject of Pay TV that “The sport is going nowhere without the teams.”

However when presented with the figures they may change their minds as the revenues from F1 on Sky are likely to be large. If just 1 million people pay £600 a year to watch F1 on SKY that’s £600 million of gross income. The BBC currently pays around £45 million a year in rights. One would imagine that the deal is likely to be based on the actual take up numbers, so there should be a back end for F1 and the teams get 50% of all revenues.

If Man U Vs Chelsea is only 2.5M then I expect the F1 to plumb as low as 400-500k

Nice chunk of money?
I think he's written some lies and doesn't understand.

It also says should be based on numbers. Even if we assume it is based on numbers and 50%, it won't be 50% of £600. itll be like 50% of £10 or something. That 600 has to pay for everything else as well.

I'm sure it is more money, but it's not going to be what he has just said.

Surely englishpremier thats 1million new SS subscribers rather than including existing ones? Id be surprised they could convert 1/6 of the existing viewing BBC F1 public that dont have SS to buying it.

Be nice to know how many people actually subscribe to SS and what percentage that is to how many have a Sky/VM package...

EDIT: This is on the assumption that all other SS programming is covered by the existing subscriber base and the additional million subs directly pay for the F1 TV rights/turnover

Sky subscriber base was around 8 million a few years ago, from my memory, which isn't very reliable ;-)

@Slam62 you are indeed entirely correct. Unless the contract is on the basis of a percentage of take up, rather than a fixed £m amount.

I'm just gutted it feels like it's all a rumour but it's not :( Sky Sports news just did a season catch up style thing on F1, sticking their noses in already! :(:(

Just under 10million subscribers in start of 2010.
So almost half the user base would need SS to get same viewing numbers and I bet SS is a small percentage of user base.

LOL @ James Allens 'maths'

Is he trying to say that ALL the income from Sky Sports subscriptions will go soley to Formula 1!

However, the core of his argument is valid. Bernie and Sky will get the teams on their side by throwing money at them.
