BBC possibly to drop F1 coverage...

However, the core of his argument is valid. Bernie and Sky will get the teams on their side by throwing money at them.

But this is why the sport won't need British viewers, money will just come from elsewhere.
We're meaningless and it's Sky Sports or nothing.

Think I'll take up gardening, or whatever else people do on Sundays during the Summer.

We will broadcast extended highlights for the rest of the grands prix just a few hours after the chequered flag has been waved. Sky will have live action from all races, qualifying and practice sessions.

So not delayed race, what's extended highlites. I can't check ATM no flash. 30-40mins?

What's the length on this one

It's also contracted till 2018, so not pulling out after 2013 like some thought.

If the whole team doesnt more fool them tbh

1hour Acidhell2 - though I assume theyll just pick up the BBC Three format...

ps3ud0

The hole 'half the races on BBC' thing confuses it, as the BBC will likely want to keep some of its team. If we end up with American style studio desk based anchors I will go mental.

LOL @ James Allens 'maths'

Is he trying to say that ALL the income from Sky Sports subscriptions will go soley to Formula 1!

JA is probably already signed up..

The deal will be a fixed price possibly increasing over time, F1 is very small change to Sky.

Major sponsors will be reviewing the budget as we speak;)

In fact I would say 90% of UK F1 viewers will never post on a discussion board like this let alone bother with F1 on Sky.

The popularity is because it was free to air.

90%?! try 99% if not more!

If F1 on Sky increases Sky Sports subscriptions by 10% I would be surprised.

Why would any of the F1 team stay with the BBC when its quite obvious their coverage is going to end in the near future and the BBC are apparently in no state to offer the kind of money Sky could.

I wouldnt be surprised if Jake gets dropped from the BBC Olympics stuff if he gets employed by Sky...

The BBC will just end up using staff from other motorsports they cover and the guys that do the practise sessions...

Thats why I think its a marginalised sport - its just not a nation favourite like football

This. MB, DC, EJ, TK and LM all have nothing else really going on so can follow F1 to Sky. However, Jake has a lot to loose as he is quite a popular likeable anchor and the BBC have used him on other things likes Football and likely the Olympics.

Jake will need promises of similar work at Sky to jump ship. However, with the way the BBC is going at the moment, I expect a lot of presenters are looking elsewhere.

Its not ending until 2018.

It would have ended much much earlier if the deal hadn't been struck.

I'd have liked to at least seen Eurosport bid.

I think the Sky coverage will be great, but no way i could justify the cost.

I could have said a month ago that BBC had exclusive F1 rights til 2013 - my how thats changed...

Once the cycle of F1 sponsors are happy with the Sky viewing figures, the BBC will be dropped like a stone - its not like Sky cant afford the £30mil the BBC will continue to pump into F1 each year. Or on the other hand if we are so insignificant to the viewing figures, why would Sky want to keep shared rights once its picked up all the BBC resources and matured the formula?

Whats not ending till 2018?

Sky have a contract to show all F1 live untill 2018.
BBC had a contract to show F1 untill the end of 2013. This is now only a 50% of races contract. I would also be very surprised if the BBC don't manage to drop F1 entirely before then.

Remember, this isn't a new deal for the BBC, its just them dropping the coverage as much as they can without breaching their current contract. If the BBC can find a way out without being taken to court by Bernie F1 would be gone from the BBC before this season is even finished.

The 2018 deal is between FOM and BSkyB only. Its effectivly a change of broadcaster as of the start of 2012, but with the BBC choosing to run a limited schedule presumably because its cheaper than the financial penalties of dropping coverage all together.

F1 will be on Sky only from 2014. If the BBC can talk Sky into buying out their contract it will be exclusively on Sky even earlier. I imagine BBC boss's have already been on the phone to Sky bosses asking them if they want to buy the rights from next year onwards.

Umm... no.

The speculation is now over. This new arrangement extends the BBC's commitment to F1 by a further five years - our existing contract, which gave us exclusive rights in the UK, was due to expire in 2013. But of course it does mean our coverage will not be as comprehensive as it has been in recent years.

So in essence the Beeb are subsiding BSkyBs F1 TV rights. LOL :D

ps3ud0

Sort of, with out some sort of free to air, I doubt the teams would have accepted it.

So it's win all round, except for us. BBC get cheap service but still show a lot. Bsb who were out the running, gets to show it.

next year though you have to pay a sky sports subscription in order to watch fly away races live, hmmm... pay sky, get up at five, whatch boring race or... stay in bed.

Indeed, don't know how that can be read wrong, especially from looking at BBC's headline.

Besides, if BBC coverage stops completely it'll definitely be a breach of the Concorde Agreement.
