BBC self-advertising and general quality

1: Get V+, Sky+ or Freeview+.
2: Record everything you want to watch
3: Play it back at least 5 minutes laterfor BBC, 10 mins per half hour on ITV
4: Skip the adverts at 32x speed.

Theres over 1000 channels with SKY and Virgin Media, How can they all be filled with soaps and competitions lol?
I generally just watch whatevers in the Factual Menu like discovery channel etc...

can't beat a bit of David Attenborough. Then I just download movies...

I don't have Sky, nor Virgin media. The op is on about normal terrestrial TV (Freeview) if I'm not mistaken. plus their is s*** all on Sky also haha.

It's becoming increasingly annoying, that the BBC is behaving like any other commercial channel these days. Between each programme, there are now at least two or three "adverts" for upcoming BBC programmes/ iPlayer/ other BBC services.

Additionally I now find BBC News 24 so un-watchable I've actually turned over to Sky News, which tends have more news, and less "an old man dressed like Santa visited some orphans in a small village today" drivel.

Generally I find less and less on the BBC that's worth watching, and I'm more and more annoyed with the way they deliver the few remaining programmes I like.

In short, the BBC in this commentator's opinion is going to hell in a hand-basket. Thoughts?

I agree completely the sooner we no longer have to pay the licence fee the better; it should be a choice like any other not something which is state mandated.

I understand that when the BBC sells its programming abroad, it's shown with commercials. And there's more and more marketing of BBC content going on.
Therefore, whereas some years ago a half hour programme would run for very nearly half an hour or so, these days a half hour programme is quite a bit shorter, to allow for commercial breaks, and so when it is shown here, the BBC has to fill the space with something, like trailers for itself. Just a theory.

One that's incorrect; the original broadcast version is edited for overseas broadcast on commercial channels.

...I'm really curious though, does the BBC TV like to push a certain cretinous Social Networking site at every opportunity like it does on their Internet sites? I know if I've seen Localised News they will almost always say 'Catch up with us on Facebook/Twitter' (This might be ITV, I have no idea what channels are on if I'm at my Mums where I see Live TV in the background) I find it quite incredulous that the BBC effectively 'Advertises' this site so much, specially given the commercial nature of it and the Personal privacy issues.

+1000

Didn't you get the memo? It's the BBC's job to make the founders of Twitter and Facebook as rich as possible via my licence fee. How did they manage with "Contact Us" submission pages and e-mail? They managed perfectly well ...

I catch the news around 1pm most days and have to say I am seriously bored of the 10-15mins of coverage the "big freeze" gets every day.

How all these places people are struggling to get around, grinding to a halt but they manag to have reporters there standing in a field "as you can see its snowing here".

Great use of resources that is.

Don't really watch much of anything on regular TV, there is nothing I go out of my way to watch other than peep show at the minute I think, Sky sports gets most of my attention.

Freeview is dire really, BBC3 is so poor its embarrassing. Isn't it aged at 18-30 kind of audience? Should suit me but I find it so dreadful.

Isn't BBC3 and a couple other channels to be dropped due to cuts? I'm sure I read that somewhere. Personally, I prefer paying the TV license. I'd rather pay it and get no advertising and a reminder or two of later programming than pay Sky's ridiculous fee and then be bombarded with 5 minutes of advertising per half hour of programming.

I agree. TV in this country is just trash. UK TV is pretty much overwhelmed with "reality" shows and glorified talent shows like that dancing one on BBC and that X-factor one. Pile on all the Worlds Strictest Parent, 30 minutes with this chef, 22 min meal with the other chef....geez.

As for news I stay away from BBC News 24..awful channel. I know its not perfect either but I've really taken to watching RT - the Russian News channel. Totally different take on things and they have some very interesting news shows as well. A lot of their newsreaders and journalists are Brits. And there is this one hella pretty Russian newsreader as well. Ohh I love her accent hee hee.

Ive not really watched TV for a few years now. Only things worth watching for me are. Formula One (the only thing i watch on BBC), Misfits which is E4, which i watch online, and Lost (RIP).

Rather boring all other times.

When start it BBC3 used to be a platform for less well known good quality programs to be aired, but now it just seems to want to be Channel 4 with it's cheap to produce reality TV.... So I would not be sorry to see it go... I mean come on, 'Fishmonger of the year'? Who thought that would be worth turning into a TV program...

The BBC seems to be becoming more shoddy as time goes on. I don't care what Nancy the Nutritionist has to say on BBC Breakfast, I want proper news.

Nor would I. Before BBC 1 HD, they used to clutter up the BBC HD channel with Doctor Who and Gavin and Stacey re-runs (from BBC3). When it's obvious that what they should have been showing was fantastic documentaries like Planet Earth. Happily now they've got the two HD channels, this seems to be more the focus of BBC HD, though it's still not perfect.

I do hope they keep BBC 4 though, it's done some great programming such as Folk Britannia and other music based programs.

Reality TV **** is what is the most annoying, its not just the BBC its all channels (freeview and sky etc) doing the reality *****.

Im looking forward to the day reality progs go away, and they all have to come up with something new.

bring back noels house party, big break, you bet, etc ohh and gladiators lol (but not that sky 1 remake fail), generation game.

I think the BBC does have a lot of great programs, but they are just let down by a few programs that fail (e.g. Robin Hood). A lot of their 'talking' shows seem to be absolute rubbish, but I suppose all talkshows are probably like this. Recently, I have thought that channel 4 has a lot of good shows on it and its related channels, so BBC would be about equal with C4, if C4 didn't have any adverts.... which it does, so BBC wins for me. I think having just a couple of minutes trailers inbetween programs is good - it allowas time to get a drink, go to the toilet etc, and might make you aware of an interesting program you wouldn't otherwise have watched.

There's a couple of reason they do this:

1. Many programmes are purchased now and in a format suitable only for commercial stations, without BBC "adverts" between them you wouldn't have a normal schedule, it'd all be finishing at random times i.e. 7:43pm, next program finishing at 8:12pm. It'd be a nightmare. In most US stations 25% of the viewing time at peak hours is adverts, not shows.

2. There's are so many channels and services available on the BBC now that they have to do something to create awareness amongst viewers, otherwise their services simply won't be used and that license fee would be even harder to justify.

I don't think reality TV is going anywhere I'm afraid, the reason? Cost. Reality TV costs next to nothing to make when you compare it to the cost of shooting a drama like Dr. Who...

These sites are mentioned constantly on 5 Live.
