BBC standing up to scientology

I don't think that is how it starts at all. I'm displaying interest in their ideas, and rather than rely on a potentially biased interpretation of reporter/scientologist viewpoints, I'll read the official literature and find out what it's about!

I think the official literature might be a little bit more biased than that program.

Aye "human kind abandoned on Earth 20,000 years ago is more plausible"

Well, to be fair there isn't really much in it.

Your missing the bigger picture here, the bbc set out to attack the scientologists and discredit them. The scientologists were minding there own business then the bbc turn up out the blue trying to make their religion look stupid! Im not surprised they were keeping an eye on him and watching who he was talking to. I think they handled themselves very well by not retaliating to this attack from the bbc. Especially when they tried to agree terms to interview right at the start and they didnt want the term cult mensioned, the bbc didnt agree so the scientologists didnt agree to the interview. The bbc then track them down and use it anyway! It was just trying to provolk a reaction.

You're missing the bigger picture - The Scientologists would only agree to do an interview if the BBC did not interview any ex-Scientologists or critics which would have made the documentary completely bias.

I honestly believe he set out to do a more balanced documentary detailing the practices and beliefs of the cult. I think that changed when he realised he would not be able to do that due to harrassment from the Church and their completely aggressive standpoint. I think at that point it changed from being a documentary about Scientology to the reporters impossible struggle trying to make a documentary about Scientology.

Obviously those people who know nothing about Scientology didn't bother to read my original post.

I've researched a bit about Scientology and tried to look at it from an unbiased point-of-view, but I always lead back to my original assumption that it is in fact a whole load of rubbish and a con to draw in as much money as possible with the veil of religion. You've gotta be outright stupid to believe the whole agenda of Scientology and Dianetics. I'm not gonna go into it again, because I've already detailed my thoughts in this post.

For a better BBC documentary, take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD9bCdHqU3s

It gives a better idea of what they are about, how they recruit people, what they do to you when they're in there. Now, tell me after watching that.. that you find it hard to believe it's not a cult? There are different "levels" to be attained in Scientology, and you obviously pay a lot of money to reach each level (think the Pyramid scam). You are not allowed to know about the aliens until you reach the highest level.. otherwise (and rumour has it) you catch pneumonia and die. How ridiculous is that?! It's a big con. You gotta be stupid to even give it a chance. Believe me, I've tried my best to see their side but it's ridiculous.

How can anybody criticise the documentary for being biased when it was the actions of the scientologists themselves that made it biased?

How can a reporter create an unbiased documentary when those representing the subject being investigated refuse to cooperate in any way and go out of their way to make the reporter as uncomfortable as possible?

The people calling it a cult have been successfully brainwashed by the bbc. Im going to reserve judgement until I have read up on it.

It is a cult. I have spent hundreds of hours reading about Scientology over the past few years (it's an interesting obsession) and there is not one scrap of publicly available documentation I have read that would make me think otherwise.

- Germany: Officially classified as a cult.
- Greece: Completely kicked out of the country for fraudulent activity.
- Court testimony from ex members expected to carry out 'Auditing Process R2- 45' (Scientology speak for assassination's)
- Story after story of shocking abuses committed by members.
- Hundreds of suicides directly linked to the "Church."
- Hundreds of "suspicious" deaths linked to the Church.
- Massive criminal court battles.
- Use of lawyers who represented many Mafia bosses.
- An intelligence agency responsible for black propaganda, smear campaigns, fraud (on a massive scale), assassination's, human rights abuses.
- Scientology ran lawsuit after lawsuit against the Cult Awareness Network until they managed to buy out the network. This network is still running but... entirely by Scientology, and is used as a recruiting tool whilst still under the guise of advising people about cults.

It is a cult and it is an extremely evil manipulative and dangerous one at that. It is not a religion in any sense of the word. It cannot be compared to any major religion because it, out and out, is not one itself.

They both brainwash......?

Sorry mate but you're talking rubbish and managing to generalise everything all in one silly little go. Not all religions brain wash people by a long chalk, and to lump scientology in with christianity and then say they both practise the same principles is pure ignorance. And no, i'm not personally religious, but I know plenty of people that are, and they don't pay a penny for their knowledge and beliefs, and they certainly were never brainwashed or forced into anything as a result of their situation or mental state. That's no different to me saying "all black guys are drug-pushing, thieving losers. And can't swim."

lol, i have done much research on scientology pre panorama and I have always maintained it is an evil cult. Ironic you use the word brainwashed to people against scientology lol.

Interesting docu by panorama last night, just reinforced my views that they, the scientologists are nothing more than a bunch of crazy lunatics. The sad thing about it is that some pretty hot celebs are part of this cult...:(

That guy Tommy Davis needs a damn good punch, the way he was harassing the BBC guy was pretty spooky...everywhere he went within an hr or so that muppet was there. Im surprised the BBC guy didnt knock his lights out tbh, altho near the end he lost his cool which i dont blame him for tbh. But it didnt put him in a good light sadly...if it was me that Tommy dude would have had a broken jaw:p.

Quite interesting though and a real eye opener, some of thier beliefs are nigh on nutty tbh. Its an cult simple as that and by the looks of it, its a pretty evil and manipulative one at that. How they can call it a religion is beyond me ...anyone who thinks its a relgion need to look up the definition of religion and then compare it with Scientology.

Makes me wonder just what Tom Cruise is really like, hes supposedly the head of Scientology or was very close to getting there i think...not sure though.

I'm wondering whether the fact that scientology are willing to go tooth and nail with whatever disagrees with them in the slightest is a sign of their strength of will or represents their biggest weakness

You don't see the Pope commissioning sensational websites against people disagree with Catholoicism, although perhaps that's because he doesn't have to because he genuinely believes in what he preaches.

pfft

strange practices that make no sense to people on the outside

a big book that is essentially a fairy tale/science fiction detailing strange and un-explainable things

its the blueprint for EVERY religion

you just have to pay for scientology (thouhg lots of other branches of religions ask for a tithe as well)

Such a blatant attempt to discredit John Sweeney. Pathetic.

Anyway, LOL at them.

indeed, so obvious, even getting a british narrator to make it sound more believable.

I love the way just as sweeney starts to reply in some of the clips, the narrator starts talking and the clip is phased out

Lol, they probably run it! My guess is that this is just a big pyramid scheme but with very deep and probably disturbing associations. My question to any member of a cult or religion would be "what is so missing from your life that you need someone else to direct it for you"?
