BBC to end Formula 1 television contract early

I'm watching the highlights via the 4 catch-up app this evening.

The Quality is poor compared to the iPlayer highlights and there are regular 4minute add breaks which are a little long with volume that seems to increase for no reason.

Ads often do this
Channel 4 has quite an aggressive ad approach

I don't see why Sky need to do this, they already have the hardcore fans, everyone else either pirated or watched highlights. If you aren't a Sky sub, would you pay loads of money just for F1.

It isn't just the app, 4OD on a browser is the same. It has pretty much meant I only watch 4OD on a PC and then only because of being able to run adblocker.

Just read that F1 ends being available on terrestrial TV after the 2018 season

So that's the end of that.

Is that just the end of the contract or has it been officially said by channel 4 of F1 that they will not re-new the contract for 2019 onwards?

Edit:
I bought Sky for F1.

I doubt people would any more though, as it now needs the full Sports pack.

I fall in to that, F1 is the only sport I regularly watch so no point in getting the full sports pack. There are other means to watch it though so even less reason to pay for Sky.

The Sky contract from 2019 to 2024 is as Exclusive UK Broadcaster.

Edit: Actually, its Exclusive Live UK Broadcaster. There is still the option for another broadcaster to show non live highlights.

In the long run, this will just mean the F1 having fewer fans. Okay, the remaining fans will be willing to pay, but there will be fewer of them.

This can't be a good move whilst advertisement is so important.

What I'd like to see is the BBC pick up some other (cheaper) motorsport, maybe Formula E, or touring cars, and give it the same quality coverage they gave F1.

FOM and the teams are paid in $, not viewers.

F1 would be happy if only 1 person watched it, so long as they paid $1bn to do so.

They will pick up just as many new viewers from the unsaturated market in Azerbaijan as they will lose from the saturated UK market too, so sponsors won't care.

I've kept sky as I have the F1 through my HD sub. If I cancel and go back I'll be stuck with taking sports which I don't want. They've just sent me an email telling me my Sky sub is going up. So 45 a month. 540 for the year to watch F1.

However a 24 hour pass for Sky Sports on Now TV is 7. Paying on Sunday afternoon to watch the qually and race in the evening is probably how I'll watch. 140 for the year.

Do you genuinely not watch a single other program or channel other than Sky Sports F1, and even then only ever the F1 race, nothing else on the channel?

It kind of makes me glad f1 is dying as I'm now not too bothered
I'd like C4 or whatever channel pick up something cheaper. I'm not that attached to f1 anymore so it doesn't hurt

It's hard enough to find people to talk about f1 to. This wi) the make it harder

Probably a bit of a blow to sponsors more than .

Money comes from the team sponsors too. Less exposure surely means advertising space on the car won't be as valuable?

Not really, there is a reason advertising space in GQ costs more than advertising in FHM/Nuts/whatever. Advertising targeting richer customers is worth more, if the majority of people who watch are those with more money who can afford subscription tv then the advertising is worth more per customer. IE if you can advertise Tag Heuer brand to 10mil people with low disposable income or 500k people with high disposable income, which advertising is would be worth more to the sponsor?

Sponsors and the teams don't give a damn about viewing figures, they care about the types of viewers and subscription tv isn't at all a problem for them.

Its not that easy

Its highly unlikely the Azerbaijan population will have as much spending power as a lot of the western European markets Bernie is less keen on these days

Therefore the sponsors are going to be advertising to less interested "customers" , so they WILL care (in the end)

I agree the damage won't be seen for quite a few years. The future of the sport, kids is where it will start to really hurt. Kids aren't interested already in hearing 200000 reasons why driver A is better than B. Or the most complicated set of rules and regulations, even the few that are some will be losing access to it.

Yes emerging markets will take up some slack for a while but only while it's free to air there.
