bbm for android

It's $0.99 a year. If that's a barrier to entry then sell your phone so you can afford food.

And according to BlackBerry

Prior to launching BBM for Android, an unreleased version of the BBM for Android app was posted online. The interest and enthusiasm we have seen already – more than 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours without even launching the official Android app – is incredible. Consequently, this unreleased version caused issues, which we have attempted to address throughout the day.

Our teams continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android and iPhone, but only when it’s ready and we know it will live up to your expectations of BBM. We are pausing the global roll-out of BBM for Android and iPhone. Customers who have already downloaded BBM for iPhone will be able to continue to use BBM. The unreleased Android app will be disabled, and customers who downloaded it should visit www.BBM.com to register for updates on official BBM for Android availability.

As soon as we are able, we will begin a staggered country roll-out of BBM for Android and continue the roll-out of BBM for iPhone. Please follow @BBM on Twitter for the latest updates and go to www.BBM.com to sign-up for updates about BBM for Android and iPhone. These issues have not impacted BBM service for BlackBerry.

So they were about a day away from launching these apps to release BBM for Android and iOS to the world, and having 1.1 million users on the system broke it. Sounds like a messaging system I'd like to use.

BB what? I'm surprised Blackberry are still around. Nokia are just about pulling themselves out of the hole nut Blackberry seem to be slipping further.

I'm with Robbo in regards to what's app. I have family members telling me to use it all the time. I'm like why? You have unlimited texts! And iMessage (or email which gives a notification) for pics and video - these apps just seem to exist to solve a problem that no one really has

Unless one of you doesn't have an iPhone........ Whatsapp is cross platform. iMessage isn't. And I can't send photos over SMS.

Hence the bit about email, which is truly cross platform as you don't need some silly app installed :/

I send someone a pic via email - it pops up instantly - it takes like 3 clicks to save the image.
How is an app more effective then this?

Because its all handled in one app. Conversations are stored as conversations, not bits of text in one app and audio/video in another. How is having it all in one place not better? Functionally whatsapp and iMessage do the same job (being a silly app that you have to install is irrelevant), so which do you prefer? iMessage or SMS + email? :/

Anyway, Yas youve seen the permissions required for the android bbm client, right? Your address book is still accessible to the app. It has to be to write the bbm pins to your contacts, I would assume

Cant say i have as i havent loaded it onto my S3 so i dont know what permissions it needs. All i know is that BBM doesnt use your phone numbers on BB, perhaps for Android it may need them but as i said i havent loaded it onto my S3 as of yet. Not sure if i will as i dont use my S3 other than for a few games/apps that arent on my BB.

Ive not put it on my s4 either, one of the threads on crackberry has a screenshot of the permissions list. It has access to your phone number and access to read/write the contacts in the address book, same as whatsapp :)

Fair enough but the point remains as far as i know, with BBM you dont have to give your phone number out. Once you are setup with BBM using the PIN method, all you need to do is to give your PIN out to accept or send invites. Whereas whatsapp, in order to have people on your contact list within whatsapp, you need to have their numbers so that it scans and adds them automatically.

Not sure what it does with the phone numbers if BBM for Android does require that option. Unless BBM for Android does use your phone number ie you need to give your number out in order to use BBM for Android. I suppose someone will have a more indepth look at what it does with the phone numbers until then its all purely speculation as to what it does or why it needs permissions to access your phonebook.

I used to think the same, then I realised all my mates were having group chats on WhatsApp and I was missing out. Got round to downloading it and haven't looked back since. Just get it, it offers way more functionality than texting.

90% of my contacts are on it, and when I actually have to SMS someone (because they aren't on WhatsApp) it really annoys me now :p

Ideally Google Hangouts should be integrated fully. This has a Chrome extension which is nice, so can type things out properly. If WhatsApp had a web client that would make it even better.

I suppose one advantage of BBM on Android / iOS is that its 'portable', i'e you can move your pin between devices.

Whatsapp also allows you to do the same as well, as long as you keep your number.

With BBM on Blackberry, all your contacts ie BBM contacts are tied into your BB ID which you need to register so that you can use BBM, now if you change your BB devices, once you have logged into BB ID then all your contacts etc come over to the new BB device.

Not sure how it will work for iphones or Androids but i pretty much think it will be the same concept.

But in contrast to Whatsapp, if you get a new contract (New Number) you can still use the same BBiD?

If that's the case i can see a great advantage for it as it becomes truly portable across whatever platform you use.

I think I'd rather not have to register considering BB will probably get sold to some company I have no idea about.

Yep thats pretty much it really, BBM isnt tied into your phone number as far as im aware but thats for BB devices, not sure about iphone or Android as they are both different to BB 10 OS and the legacy ie older BB devices.

Again not sure if you have a BB phone but decide to go to either iphone/Android, whether or not it will work ie take your contacts across. But i would hazard a guess that seeing as BBM works with BBID, there shouldnt be a problem either way etc.

If they get sold, not that they will imho the fact is that it doesnt matter anymore in all honesty. If you have whatsapp, use google services or facebook and even your network, theres every chance your number has been sold to other companies that you do not know about;).
