how far are you from your exchange?

I'm thinking of changing to Be* I'm on Virgin Media at the moment, I take it I don't need to migrate since I'm with a cable provider? (I have a Bt Phone line already) also how long do they usually take to activate?

9 days from order to activation for me.

How many download MB's do you get?

Does anyone know what speeds I might get based on my line stats? I am 2.19km away from my exchange according to DSLZone.

ReceiveAttenuation_dB= 50
ReceiveMargin_dB= 21
RxOutputPower_dBm= 0
SendAttenuation_dB= 31
SendMargin_dB= 28

It's unfortunate that the true distance is via the cable, which knowing what BT are like, probably runs 3 miles the wrong way before going back to the exchange :'(

I'm 1.3kilometres away

870 metres versus 1.3km, yet the latter has the lower attenuation (ergo, the shorter line) - you're both about 3km of copper from the exchange.

Nearer 5km of copper from the exchange - Be might not give you a service at all.

If you're quoting stats and asking what sorts of speeds you're going to get, you really need to give the speed it's connected at as well, or most of the values are completely worthless (bar the attenuation, it's a property of the line and frequencies its measured at).

It can be touch and go, when we had three computers linked up to it you could really tell and I'm pretty certain that my two housemates never went on p2p or anything, neither did I.

It sometimes can be very slow for me (Kensington Liverpool) though it's one of the last few connections which is uncapped. Considering I do almost everything through the internet, this is vital for me :)

i've been with be since september last year and have next to no complaints
the only real issue i've had is to cancel you either give 3 months notice or pay £50
oh and you have to cancel if you move house, they cant migrate your account, you have to set up a new one, you get the £50 back though
i was getting 22+ being over the road from the exchange
just moved house, connected yesterday and was getting about 5 earlier, but that was having left the bebox on while it was connected, so have reset to see whether it improves a little, but now i cant rdp to my pc to check :S

well ive finally managed to get online this morning after my bebox was delivered (3 days late) i really dont know what im looking at regarding line stats but i'll post them and maybe some one could tell me what i should be looking at

Code:
Uptime:	0 days, 3:00:41
Modulation:	G.992.5 Annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:	1,118 / 7,458
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/GB]:	109.54 / 2.45
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:	12.0 / 19.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:	28.0 / 52.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:	6.5 / 6.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote):	TMMB / µ
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote):	0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote):	0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote):	0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote):	0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote):	189 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down):	0 / 135,624
CRC Errors (Up/Down):	327 / 312
HEC Errors (Up/Down):	593 / 251

so is that lot good or bad ? im around 3.5km from the exchange

That's good considering your attenuation, can't see you getting any better tbh.

so a higher value on Line Attenuation is bad yeah ? like i said i know nothing about stuff like that, you'd think i would really coz ive had BB for 7 years or so :D

but this is the first time ive used a router, ive always used my old speedtouch modem so never had to bother with any of this jargon :)

Just a quick question regarding the bebox , ive noticed the WLAN light is glowing on the modem but i have no other wireless cards fitted to any of my machines atm , would i be better disabling the wireless connection on the bebox ? and if so how would i do that ?

Edit: never mind ive figured it out :)

I get:

Protocol ADSL State Showtime
Data Path Fast
Operation Mode G.DMT

Downstream Upstream
Line Status ADSL Link Speed 576 kbps 288 kbps
SNR 42.5 dB 11.5 dB
ATEN 23 dB 13 dB
Line Error ADSL layer FEC 0 0
CRC 2 0
ATM layer HEC 0 0
Frame Counter 788046 477030

And am apparantly 810m from my exchange (as the crow flies). Aten looks ok for 15+ Mbs, but isnt the SNR a little high?

High SNR margin is a good thing, and it's a result of you only being on fixed rate 512kbps. You might find that the SNR margin could be even higher, but the modem is cutting back the power.

ok, im trying to convince my mum (main user of the internet as she is a self employed IT Basic Skills Consultant) that:

1) 512KBs is too slow, especially when there are 3 people connecting through it (pretty easy to do)
2) that our old D-Link box (which needs rebooting every few hours at the moment) needs to be booted (literaly, i have my steel toecap coots waiting) and replaced, ideal with something like a DG834PN or DG834N (any alternatives are welcome)
3) that Be is the best solution as far as cost/performance goes (which is is as far as i can see, and i'm drooling over the thought of all that bandwidth)

I would however apreciate some alternatives to Be that might incorporate a decent phone/DSL package. And some arguments to convince my mum that the Bebox will be worth replacing with £60 worth of Netgear router.
