be* - and bad reviews?

Any of this make any sense to anyone? :/

You'd probably wind up with <8Mbps - the chart says 8Mbps, but it also says you should get ~7Mbps on ADSL, and the most you're going to get with that SNR margin is 5Mbps. DSL Zone's guesswork reckons you'd get 4-8Mbps.

It might be worth trying your modem at the master socket without any extensions, and seeing what you get.

Handy tool

My Downstream Attenuation is 35 and it says -

"Based on the attenuation you entered, we estimate that your line can support around 8 - 12 Mbps on ADSL2+"

I get the full 8meg on ADSL max now so I would have thought that would have been higher? Won't be moving to 'Be' in this case I think :)

the real advantage of be is they are one of the few truely unlimited ISPs

no throttling or packet shaping and completely without any limits

something only an LLU provider can usually provide.

Not quite true I'm affraid.

Although Be* dont actually quote any figures, they do have a FUP which states

If it’s felt that any Be unlimited or Pro member’s Internet activities are so excessive that other members are detrimentally affected, Be may give the member generating the excessive web traffic a written warning (by email or otherwise). In extreme circumstances, should the levels of activity not immediately decrease after the warning, Be may terminate that member’s services.

After reading nothing but goodness I'm thinking of moving to these guys, but the line checker is a bit useless, can't tell me how far or close I am able to get to 24mb.

:(

Problem two as some know BT told me its up to my new isp to stop my internet direct debits with BT, I can't get my head round this as to why? Surely not? I thought it was the end user(me) that had to tell them to stop taking payments? Atleast it was with my previous broadband suppliers.

I'm ready to make the move to Be* though.

Like you were told in your other thread, that's correct. You stop the Direct Debit, and BT will be told when you've migrated to cancel the account (but not by Be, by BT Wholesale).

So does anyone know what the magic number that will get you a warning from Be?

Also as they are LLU and use their own equipment is bandwidth cheaper for them compared to a non LLU ISP?

ive known people leaving newsleacher on all day every day and not a word from them.

BE are in their network development phase so right now they have few customers and more bandwidth than they need.

Although the bandwidth can be cheaper for them, as they do not use the over priced BT Central products that IPStream ISPs have to use, it is also up to them to manage where they have the bandwidth across their network so it makes them more sensitive to local variations like a cluster of heavy users on one Exchange for instance.

Right now problems will be few.

Once their owner, O2, start a mass marketing campaign we'll see if the netowrk can still stand to be 'unlimited', I suspect not.

Right now though and probably for another few months they will be just fine.

Can you expand on that? I was wondering about the FUP they hope never to implement. It seems they are the ISP of choice at the mo they will be getting hammerd with all the heavy downloaders jumping on board.

From what i gather, its a case by case basis.

Bit off topic... but ... what model router do you get with be..
it says "Free Wireless Router" on the site. Is it worth buying a better one?

It's a Speedtouch 780WL, with some custom settings to let you get away without putting in a username/password.

Hopefully I'll be switching to BE once I cancel my Zen account. Even though
Zen are an excellent ISP, I'll be saving £6 a month and getting atleast 8 times the speed I'm currently on. (Zen 1meg sevice for £30pm).

Yeah i was a bit sad to leave Zen as they have always been excelent with me through the whole ADSL Max saga. Hopefully Zen will start offering LLU services nationwide.

If any of you have a fairly low attenuation I recommend getting switched over to fastpath. I got switched over today and my standard sync is now higher and my ping (when using wireless) has dropped to roughly 12ms.

They were great with my connection on the day. Woke up at 6:30 for work and it was on already. :)

It was the same for me back in February. What are your Line stats like?
