Be Broadband

Be is nice but I want my school's connection :/

Alright I just got connected and all that :) Although it seems quite poor.
Down: 2327 kbps
Up: 681 kbps
What's going on?

Using BeBox Speedtouch 585 v6.1.4.3

I have you been in contact with Be's technical support. They originally said my line is 8km away from the exchange (though according to this, it is 2.18km as the crow flies); but after the contact they believe this is a problem with the line somewhere. So they'll be fixing it in about 4 days.

I just noticed that BE gave me a small discount on my bill this month as it's my birthday :) OK it was only £1 and change but the thought is what counts right

Back to the BE discussion, whats you attenuation like Inazuma?

I myself have been having a lot of problems with disconnects, which is partly due to people cutting through extension cables while decorating  and partly due to my SN margin which is dropping as low as 1 after dark.

Guess being over the road from the exchange does'nt guarantee a faultless internet. I dont even sync full speed despite attenuation in the single numbers.

Also my BE box has a habbit of just restarting its self for no aparent reason, I dont use torrents so it's certainly not under stress.

I have got a DG834GT on the way, baragn at £20 off the bay, hopefully this in conjunction with Openreach coming round to relocate the master socket, I should be onto a stable connection.

You are around 210 metres from your exchange (as the crow flies).

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 3.5 / 6.5

My o2 connection activated today.

Tried using the o2 box initially, found the signal hopeless, thankfully getting things working with the Netgear DG834G was dead simple and my signal strength is perfect.

I'm on the up to 16meg service here is my stats:

DownStream Connection Speed 15639 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 1187 kbps

Line Attenuation 29 db 6 db
Noise Margin 6 db 5 db

Sync speed is great, am I right in thinking my noise margin is rather low?
Previously it was 10db (attenuation was 25db) I wasn't expecting these to change - I guess since its LLU my data travels a different route?

Download speeds seem a bit "incosistent" and seem to fluctuate, could this be due to noise?

Nevertheless, my speeds are still at lowest better than what I was paying twice as much for previously. :)

Im still learning how ADSL2+ works but I think the lower the SN margin the faster you will sync but at the cost of stability. I think 6 is bang on the money to where you want it as long as your line remains stable.

Your line atten is that 29db up and 6db down? I didnt know the numbers could be so far apart. Mine are..

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 3.5 / 6.5 but im still not sure how it all works, maybe mine are broke and yours are bang on.

How has everyone been faring tonight? My upload has been a total mess since Saturday night, hovering around 400-700kbps instead of 1.2mb. My router has been heavily disconnecting/reconnecting all day today. I'd estimate around 20+ times.

I've been told that some transatlantic line between the UK and USA was severed resulting in isp issues for a lot of people. No solid sauce for that though.

disconnections is a line issue mate, not a network issue.

i'd give CS a call and get them to do a line quality diagnosis.

Your download speeds should even themselves out eventually. The noise margin will also probably fluctuate too to try and stable your line.

Down and up respectively - if the upstream attenuation's greater than the downstream then you've either got a fault or your modem's reporting rubbish.

Nope, but ADSL2+ has a lot more range to go to get the most your line will do.
6dB is the default target so unless you're getting full rate, the nearer to that you can be the better.

Cheers guys, one more question, since I'm syncing at down at 15974 kbps does this suggest my line wont be cable of 16meg+ speeds? Wasn't sure if that was the equivalent of "maxing out" the 16meg service or not...

Is it normal for the connection to become unstable while it is raining?

My connection is normally at 5mbit/1mbit, but when it rains, for some strange reason it goes up to about 7mbit/1mbit and starts to become very unstable, disconnecting every few hours or so, untill the rain stops.

Possibly bad cables up the pole? Water getting in....
I've had this problem before. Next time it rains do a quiet line test 17070 option 2. Any interference then get Openreach on the case. Also check your SNR, im guessing it takes a nose dive.

I'd just like to put in a thanks for this topic and it's posters. It's helped me decided on trying out Be* as Virgin is just ******* all over me at the moment.

I believe that is the max sync you can get with interleaving turned on, which it will be as your a new customer. So you should beable to squeeze some more if you had a 24mb product. (pretty sure having interleaving on takes a very small slice out of the max sync, someone correct me if im wrong)

Ok lads even with virgin now offering me my current £10 2mb deal for another 6 months after I said ok shut it off.., I’m still thinking Be is the way..

So this is the gear after reading people getting better results when they don’t use the Bebox….

Netgear DG834N Rangemax Next 270Mbps ADSL Router & Firewall

With

Netgear WN311T 300Mbps RangeMax NEXT Gigabit Edition Wireless Desktop PCI Network Adapter

Netgear RangeMax WN121T Next Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter this would be great as well handy being usb or is that a no no?

I was under a similar impression. I'm not sure I can really justify £5 a month more for what would could be about 4meg more maximum...
