Be Broadband

Be are excellent, however, the supplied Be router is a bag of crap. My first one stopped working, the second one's wireless functionality is abysmal. Swapped to a netgear dg834gt, which is rock solid, but I only get 8.5mb down with it, whereas I was getting 13mb down on the original Be router.

Hardware revision 7 of the routers has been announced but I think they're being handed out to new members only.

Been with BE for half a year now I think and had nothing but trouble.

Slow download speeds, meant to get around 14mb/s but lucky if I get 6.
Constant disconnects
DNS issues
Router issues

Everytime I try asking them to fix it I get told to check my filters.

Great.

Well, I feel dirty but I renewed with Tiscali yesterday. I was paying £19 per month (they were pretty much all this price when I signed up) plus line rental. I've now got the same service for £15 per month including line rental. £15 a month cheaper in other words.

While a faster service would be nice, I'm not such a heavy downloader that I can afford to turn down 15 notes a month savings as well has having to pay £25 for Be setup and with the possibility of another £50-60 for a better router on top of the supplied one.

EDIT - but thanks for the comments and advice anyway :)

I myself moved from Tiscali last september to Be broadband, Have to say I have nothing but utter praise for this absolutely fantastic ISP.

Here's why :

The Bebox included is as hassle free as you can imagine, I get uncapped downloads, speeds are my theoretical maximum of my line (7.1mbit as i'm too far from the exchange).
Customer service is all based in India - but for once it isn't a problem, the staff keep to there promise are overly helpfull and don't mess you around.

If they are running service downtime, I get a text on my mobile phone and e-mail notifying me, other notificaions are also text to me.

In all my life of internet providers Be has been the very best!

Now lets just hope they dont end up doing what tiscali did - filtering download speeds,
Tiscali is an utter disgrace of a firm, unhelpfull, constant hangups when speaking to tech support in India, and the speed issues I had where just Chaos!

My 8mbit was never faster than 1mbit at some times, they used to battle to provide any kind of service.

^ i joined about 1 week ago and have been VERY pleased! I also requested to be switched to fastpath and they did it in under 24 hours and shaved about 25ms off my ping times :)

I have been with them about 7 months and they have been fantastic. The forums are really helpful and when i have had a problem i just raised a ticket and it was dealt with within 24 hours.

The speed is excellent and if there is a break in service they will email you to let you know in advance (its very rare and only ever in the small hours anyway).

I am moving house in the next 2 weeks so this will be the real test of the customer services. Fingers crossed!

Ugh :/

edit: Do find it kind of amusing that you've taken on board the comments of the one or two nay-sayers and mostly glossed over all the positive reviews. Have you seen the amount of flak Tiscali takes online (and deservedly so)?

Another happy BeThere customer here. Connection has been rock solid ever since i've had it.

They txt you if there's any problems.

Customer service is reasonable as well.

Only minus point is the Thompson router that comes bundled as part of the deal, but you can always buy your own router if it's a problem (which is what I did)

You've evidently not fully read the post where I've basically said it's all down to money :)

I could pay £15 all in for a modest service which has had maybe 4 outages in the last 15 or 16 months

Or I could pay £30 + network card + installation fee + maybe a better router for what is no doubt a faster download speed with probably better service (with the usual ymmv proviso)

I can't justify the extra outlay for the downloading I do. Worst case scenario is that it's £250 more expensive over the year for Be and it's money I'd rather spend elsewhere. It's nothing to do with ignoring opinions put forward here.

Be lite is £14/month and installation fee is near nothing (in fact, using quidco you get over £50 back, which would cover the install fee and the price of a Netgear DG834GT from ebay).

Be lite these days is unlimited 8mbit btw.

I probably sounded overly harsh in my edit. Apologies.

No need to apologise :p

Not that hes renewed with Tiscali, we should all come out and say how great BE is :P

Ive had BE since Nov when I moved into my new flat :) awesome!

Around 2200KBps-2100KBps down and anything up to 240-250KBps upload :) The only complaint is the ****** Speedtouch they give you :p but even thats ok I suppose, just needs a reboot now and then which will have to do till I get round to getting a new Netgear

Do I need it? I've just signed up with BE. Should I be getting this FastPath thing too? Does it cost more?

<--- Noob

Cool I like low pings :p

Tempted to ask BE to put me on it straight away but I think I'll see what my pings are like :)

/edit is there any reason NOT to switch to it? Do BE usually put you on it automatically or should I ask?
