I've been with Be* for just over a year now, no complaints here 
I'm approx 3 1/4 of mile from the exchange and recieve 17Mb down 2Mb up.
The problem with the distance on the ageing phone line ADSL, is that your property maybe next door to the exchange, but that doesn't mean you will receive the full quted 24Mb.
The reason is actual line distance, the BT line that comes into your property may infact travel 500 yards/1 mile/2 miles etc in the wrong direction before it returns to the exchange
With Virgin on the other hand, their Cable broadband quoted max speeds are supposed to be that no matter where your located.
If i had the chance, i'd give Virgin a go, but untill they get their act together and install digital cable where i live, i'll have to stick with crusty old Telephone ADSL.
