Bear Grylls is crazy.

Survivorman is way much better, this guy does all his own camera work so he is completely alone. He spent a week in the arctic with only a small pouch of seal meat to eat, which lasted only a few days. I think during his time in the arctic he expended something like 30,000 calories with only an intake of a few thousand..........if you get the chance to watch it then do

I watched Bear Grylls last night where he's in the Costa Rican rainforest.
All the way through I was thinking "what a load of tosh".

It's all so scripted and blatently not all real.
A few things that I thought were odd:

He climbed to the top of a VERY high tree, where there just happened to be a camera man mounted nice and safely who could take some arty farty shots with no camera shake, while Grylls was hanging on to a branch for dear life.

Some of the "action" shots of him sliding down a very steep slope were shot twice - once with a bracket mounted handycam pointed at his face then again with a normal camera from a third person view.

He made himself a shelter for the night and in the middle of the night there was torrential rainfall and he felt sick - so he did a little cameo bit then very tidily threw up at the end. In the morning there was not a wet leaf in sight and his fire was still going very slowly (I can't see why he'd relight it in the morning if he wasn't going to cook on it or repel insects and you certainly wouldn't do it for the ambiance if it took you an hour to do before).

Then, feeling "very weak" he scales a small waterfall with nothing but his hands because he can't afford to waste "30 minutes thrashing around the forest to get there", to go find some sap from a milk tree.

Then, still feeling "very weak and having no energy left" he ran, splashed, jumped and bombed his way down the river expending more energy than necessary (I suppose it made him look cool though!) until he found the main river and made a raft.

Once he was floating down the river, he decided that he didnt want to risk being dragged out to sea by the current (even though he later tells us it's no biggy, just don't fight it and it'll eventually take you back to shore) and so goes rambling through the mangroves for *apparently* three hours before deciding to go back to his raft to continue down the river.

Once he gets out in to the ocean, he gets battered off his raft and handily gets washed up right in front of the camera man where he spots some 'electric lights' and gets saved.

Now that's just one episode - I'd hate to see what the others are like.
Give me Ray Mears any day thanks.

Did anyone see the episode where he built a raft, then after he had gotten away from shore he decided to get off the raft for some reason, then suddenly he jumped back on looking like he had seen a ghost. A few seconds later a huge tiger shark comes right up to the raft

Nope, not seen that one.

I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't get killed doing it because he looks like a performing monkey doing some of the stunts and capers.

Mears > Grylls

Anyday of the week! I mean wading through the everglades with your trousers rolled up? you dont survive that way. Ray Mears would have made a canoe for christ sake... do it properly Mr Grylls!

Lets see Grylls make anything useful from birch bark or the leaves of a pandanas tree!

You don't survive very long the way he acts. Why did he need to eat the fish raw? Ray would never have got into that situation, he would have collected food along his journey or at least had the means to start a fire on his person!

In conclusion: Bear Grylls sucks. Ray Mears kicks ass.

Oh dear oh dear for all you grylls fanboys... http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article2116195.ece

Is he the guy who had a parachuting accident and broke his neck, then climbed Mount Everest about 2 months later  nutter!

Its a TV Show.. granted its supposed to be showing you how to survive but how many ppl will ever need to use any of those skills. I am sure the bloke is hard as nails and had definately done everything on his show in the past. Who cares if its scripted? Who cares if he sleeps in a lodge, hotel or a termits nest? Its entertainment at the end of it and at the begining of the show says that he is going to show you how to survive...

He isnt alone...He has a backup team a little way away..When hes in dangerous places, he has his team do daily flybys or sailbys to check he is ok..

and Survivorman is great...if you want to survive for 7 days ONLY.any more and youre dead.

I really liked watching the bear grylls series too. Obviously some of it is OTT but on the whole, i thought it was good.

Obviously i was wrong :p

You can't really compare them both. One is ex-SAS and does things quickly. The other is one with the trees and the badgers and so forth. Both are great and I respect all of their skills.

I am dissapointed with Grylls in Born Survivor because as has been said a lot of it is scripted and made overly dramatic, but it is, at the end of the day entertainment and all of the skills displayed are valid, even if it took several takes and involved a cameraman dangling off a branch.

Ray Mears annoys me in that in a lot of his programs he tends to gloss over some information, or say things like "then you just do this knot" and not [aha] actually show you. Granted he couldn't fit everything in to his shows, but I suspect it's more to do with his £500 a time survival courses. Wouldn't want to give it away for free now would we?

So, in conclusion - both are great but also have their flaws [or rather, their shows have flaws].

Hmmmm, it's disappointing that some of it is staged- but i suppose he's still showing the ways you would do things, even if he's not doing them himself.

I'll still watch it, because I think it's a good show; much better than most of the stuff on TV :p

As the BBC website says, it's more of a guide on how to survive. Shame it was scripted here and there, but it was brilliant entertainment when i did watch it.

I don't think any of us doubted that some of the TV show was acted up a little to make it more entertaining. His credentials are still pretty solid though.

As mentioned above, I don't think many people thought Grylls' adventures were 100% real. Frankly I couldn't care less whether it was dramatised or not, it's still a good watch. :)
