Bear Grylls

Respect for falling out of the sky? No doubt he's in peak physical condition compared to most but it's hardly his finest moment.

If I had to survive outside of civilization I'd rather be with mears, bear would probably kill me and eat me.

It has been proven that he has assistance and that everything isn't quite as he makes it out to be. It is great entertainment though!

Ahh, but they would have done a 'recce' beforehand which would have been less assistance.

At the end of the day you need the crew there to get the shots/sound - we'd complain if it was rubbish filming.

Also some of his trips last far longer than implied in shooting simply to get the footage/events etc they need for TV.

Proper nice guy and really does his bit for Scouts as well which I really respect!

You do know that survival has been Mears livelihood from his teens right? His TV work comes second to his survival training workshops. He's also a well published author of survivalist literature. He's learned from indigenous people all around the world. He's been in the game for over 25 years.

Grylls knowledge comes from his stint in the army. Where he nearly crippled himself by not immediately deploying his reserve chute.

Anyone watch bears wild weekend?
Bear Grylls takes comedy writer and actress Miranda Hart on a once-in-a-lifetime expedition to the spectacular Swiss Alps.

Bear challenges novice Miranda to go far beyond her comfort zone with a series of exhilarating adventures during an intense two-day expedition.

Miranda traverses a glacier, crosses crevasses roped to Bear, tackles deep snow in snow shoes and completes a huge boulder scramble. She also faces her greatest fears when she flies in a helicopter and abseils down a waterfall.

Thought it was good, slightly let down by Miranda, however next week it's with johnthan wossy, I can't wait, that's going to be epic.

Used to love Bear Grylls until I watched more and more of the episodes. All of his survival techniques pretty much follow the same format:

1. Complain about water.
2. Drink water from plant.
3. Eat spider or insect.
4. Build shelter or hammock.
5. Eat dead animal.
6. Drink own urine.
7. Abseil down something.
8. Drink some more urine.
9. Cross a river in a stupid way.
10. Sprint to a helicopter and leave the camera-man behind.

Ray Mears on the other hand, used to be awesome til he did that random series going round Britain with that weird bloke who liked looking at mushrooms. I've never seen him in the same light. Everything he does now is just looking at plants, what happened to the fire building and the shelters in the wild? I don't care about what bloody nettles I can eat or what flower petal I can rub on a rash... Jheeze.

Bear Grylls does far more exciting stuff. The start of the episodes are always awesome too. I like the adrenaline filled scenes. Most of them are completely OTT and unnecessary but it makes a good watch! :)

I like both but Mears is a bit boring. Since I'm never going to actually have to employ these techniques, I'd rather be entertained than educated.

I don't think much of Grylls, like why did you scramble down that rock face when the camera man is walking on the grass. I prefer a bit of old school Ray Mears.

Love Grylls, i think hes bloddy hilarious with the stuff he gets up to lol.

Never really took much of a liking to Mears though, found his shows boring and mundane compared to Grylls, whos much more entertaining...i mean who the **** would sleep in a gutted out camel??:p

New series on at the moment Just learnt something new a fire piston, didn't know it was possible and even after reading it I can't but be like wtf...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_piston compressing air ignites tinder, mind explodes.

Still can't compendium air doing that, at relatively low pressure.

I love Bear and Mears. I don't really think they can be compared with each other tbh, Mears show is all about teaching survival techniques, Bears all about entertainment. Bear would be damn good in a survival situation, and people can't say he's rubbish at what he does. Only the best get to the top of Everest, and survive to gloat about it.

Also, the main reason I posted in this thread was just to say he has been sacked by discovery channel. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17364327

Haha. If you think Ray Mears is a wanna be, you don't know much at all about survival, do you?

Maybe you should go back to playing Call of Duty, or whatever it is that you do.

As someone else said, they make completely different types of programme. If you want fun mindless daredevil challenges, watch Grylls. If you want factual information about survival, watch Mears.

I don't agree with entertainment vs knowledge.

It's more different survival techniques.

Mears is very much long term survival, Bears is on the run or in an extreme emergency survival.

No one in a survival situation, is going to have time to hollow out a traditional canoe Mears style. Or rustle up a 4 course meal, thinking about flavours.
Which is why both are great.
