Bear with it's head stuck in a jar?

cause during the few minutes it takes for the tranq to work (assuming it stays in and doesn't get pulled out) the now very angry confused and hungry bear, may well decide to charge someone and use it's claws to rip their face off.

Well it sure as hell wasn't going to bite anyone, was it.

Poor bear. I'm sure if they'd thought about it for more than half a second, they could have worked something else out.

It still has claws and you can bet people actually trained in this situation, animal control vets etc, all decided this was the best course of action not just "oh well lets shoot it"

lol @ guys saying "omg why didn't you tranquilse it?" "stupid trigger happy Americans...etc" "I could have darted it easily, stupid Americans"

You know basically NOTHING of the situtation you morons. You read a bit of text and think you know it all and the best course of action given the situation which isn't even described clearly and fully.

I dont understand why they couldnt just tranquilize the bear.

All i can read about not being able to tranquilize the bear is this -

"Efforts to tranquilise the animal failed because the bear "stayed in forested areas", he said"

Im guessing they couldnt get a clear shot from all the trees etc....

They seemed to get a pretty clear shot when they fired a bullet at the poor thing :(

Crazy, nutter, trigger happy fools!
6 days and they couldn't tranq it?! bleeding hell, Bill Oddie could have tranqed it in that time!

Much harder to tranq a wild animal, than shoot it with a rifle at range. Go into the forest, and try and get within 50 yards of a deer, without it bolting, and in direct line with no long grass, or trees/branches in the way.

So the fact that the majority of us think that it's a bit off that some police killed a bear given the information at hand makes us morons? Think you need a reality check.

Also using capitals in your post like that doesn't help your argument at all, it just makes it look like you can't communicate/articulate properly.

^ What a knob.

Anyway, I read this in the news this morning and was quite saddened. Mainly for the bear and its situation (days without food/water and in panic). However, sad that people in the U.S can't seem to capture a wild animal alive in 6 days.

Funny thing is, all this rubbish about not getting a clear shot, yet the picture on BBC clearly shows the bear out in the open, on its own....no clear shot there or were they all on lunch at the time? Perhaps shoulda left the tranq gun with the photographer.

this...

Especially when the bear can run a hell of a lot faster than you, and even with a jar on your head kill you or any person it sees with ease.

Whopping great lens? Like I said try and get 20-50 yards from a wild animal, in the open.

Maybe so...still, hard to believe that once in 6 days there was no oppertunity. It must have stopped to rest at some point surely?

but the bbc quotes say that the issue with tranquilizing it was the forest. I don't think the town was in the middle of the forest

Also if people couldn't get close enough to a bear without it scarpering then why worry about it going into a town? Presumably it would just run the opposite direction?

I know it's not as clean cut as that and God knows what it would do in a busy town but I bet it's more of a case of it was reported 6 days prior and they couldn't catch it so forgot about it, then 6 days later after its been forgotten about wanders into town. Speculation obviously but it wouldn't suprise me if it were true.

Sniper rifle dart gun? It is America.... :)

You have to fire it from point blank range. Fine for animals that aren't scared of humans. But not a chance for deer and bears. And if a bear isn't scared of humans, then I'd start to worry, even one with a jar on there head. Those claws can rip you to bits, and even if he was clawless can trample you, or swipe you hard enough to break your ribs.
