beast CPU cooler for x2 4400

its annoying as you get a lot more then needed of that stuff, although its very cheap i feel like im wasting the rest.

This leads me to beleive however that the stuff needs to be replaced every few months or something, is this true?
nope

but you need to reapply (clean then..) if you remove/move/etc the hsf :D

Sorry to hijack the topic, but I'm looking at getting an X2 4200+ sometime in August, and I'm in a simikar situation. Want a CPU cooler that's quiet as possible as I use a lot of media so I'll pay extra for minimum noise, but my PC is on 24-7 and is sometimes use for gaming.
Obviously I'm going to expect noise on a higher end processor such as this, but I may as well go for the best option here.

Looks like the Scythe Ninja + 120mm fan, or the Zalman 9500 (which I'm assuming is the first one on here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Zalman_121.html ), is the way to go, right? Is the latter superior?

simple answer is do not get the 4200

either the 3800 or 4400 but not the 4200 as most x2 will do 4800 speeds but you sacrifice the cache.

2 sweet spots in the x2 range ..

the 3800 or the 4400 all others are redundant imo

Although the Ninja was designed as a passive heatsink, it isn't rated at CPUs over the Athlon 64 3500+. However, it does come with a 120mm fan that according to Scythe is pretty darn quiet.

SiriusB

its rated for cpu's upto the 3500+ only when running as a passive sink. with a fan on it (the scythe 120mm fan runs @ 1200rpm and it IS very quiet), it'll cool just about any a64 you can find on air. Like my 148 @ 3ghz loading at 48c.

Or you could buy a ninja, which is SILENT all the time :) (with the right fan, that is)
SILENT = no fan :p

But yea, a good 120mm fan would give you quiet (near silent) operation. The Nexus/Yate Loon are highly regarded fans for the Ninja.

addy_010, am thinking about replacing my 4400+ stock hsf, which one did u go for in the end?
