So when the pavements get icy it turns into a slip fest for me. My shoes are rather good apart from their capabilities on ice so I decided to invest in a pair of these. Does anyone have anything similar? Do you think they are overkill?

I'd say thats a great idea though i'd wonder how it feels through the sole if you are not on ice any more. Another option for some might be a pair of old football boots with metal studs.

Hmm.. Interesting, could do with some of these before I slip on my *** doing farm work :(

I work on a farm also, but could never justify the cost of buying these for work.. wouldn't last a week!

Seem fine for walking around in public though..

Clas Ohlson had them for a reasonable price, not sure if there will be any now post-snow. A reasonable measure I would say. I favour big boots, lots of grip, keep my feet warm and dry.

No, not overkill. I wear something similar now - I consider £15 for a pair of spikes I can wear over any shoes a reasonable outlay to keep myself in one piece. If I hit the deck after a slip, I could seriously damage myself - I fell 15 years ago and was in agony for weeks (and still feel the occasional twinge now!).

Of course, there are plenty of macho men who think wearing any kind of protective gear makes you less of a man - where do you draw the line? Scarves, hats, wellies? Anyway, do you really care what anyone like that thinks? I know I don't :D

just ge a cheap pair of boots,...

ive got some 10year old boots that i wear during the snowy periods and they give loads of grip compared to trainers/shoes

Good idea tbh. I use steel spikes in my golf shoes when it gets icy, and they work brilliantly.
