Pander to a "has been" that moved to LA so his wife could be a fashion designer

Plenty of worthy older players in Great Britain

I don't get this level of Beckham hate.

He did great things for the England team and is still a good player (not to his best but still a good player IMO) so why shouldn't he be included?

Most peoples reason are like yours "cause he went to america and I don't like him or his wife!11!1!" reeks of jealousy rather than a solid reason.

Given Wilshire's out, Rodwell's out, Cleverley has barely played any football I can see the midfield choices being limited to Barry, Lampard, Gerrard, Parker and maybe Jones & Henderson for the Euro's so tell me Beckham wouldn't be a better option than some of those?

+1

You forgot Carrick, or you think he wont be chosen/ taken?

Personally think he should be taken to one or the other for his experience and I believe he is generally liked within the squad

(even if its a case of giving him a couple of sub appearances 1st to see how his fitness is etc, I dont see why he shouldnt be included at all)

Not that I care about England but I came to the realisation a long time ago that they'd pick people up off the streets to play for England before Carrick gets a game.

Like I said doesn't bother me, give him and Scholes the summer off so they're well rested for us come August

I don't think football should be in the Olympics at all. The Euros and WC are enough.
I'd have the Olympic one as a properly amateur event. They've organised international tournaments for that before, and it would be great exposure for the players.

Great things?

He won nothing with England, great ability but people tend to forget what players were like week in week out, he use to get slated and went missing in games. Beckham was clever really, branded himself as some sort of superstar after he left Man Utd and won the La Liga once and this was in his prime.

I'm with cheets on this, even as a die hard United fan. He was a great player for United but he was forgettable in an England shirt, bar one moment of brilliance. If Beckham had a brain we might have won in 98.

I think most people would prefer anyone off the street in an England shirt over Carrick.

Sideways pass... sideways pass.... sideways pass.... ONG BACKWARD PASS.... sideways pass.... and on and on. **** player and I wouldn't even have him on a free transfer at Newcastle even without Tiote and Cabaye.

Point me out a player who doesn't go missing in some matches, not everyone can play fantastic every match (unless you are Messi :p)

He was never the best player in the world but he was a great midfielder, fantastic in deadball situations and one of the best England players on the ball in the past ten years I have seen. He is still a better passer and creator of play then most of our current central midfielders.

As opposed to Carrick I mentioned above I would have Beckham at Newcastle as he has more ability in his verging on useless left foot than Carrick has in both and you can still see him creating things when he gets the ball. He can still do a job and he deserves every opportunity to do so.

Most people are stupid

Correction most people on the Internet are stupid.

Calling me stupid because I recognise the fact (a fact that most ManU fans have decided to conveniently forget recently after a few decent games) that Carrick is at best an average player, stay classy Tom

Though I will try and keep some of this Carrick love as quotables for next season when you are calling him worse than **** like ManU fans normally do.

No, it was correct the first time Tom. Fickle fans.

If you think you're ever going to see any United fan on here bar myself say anything positive about Carrick then you'll be waiting a very very very long time!

While Olympic football is a joke, it just makes it an even bigger farce picking Beckham, he won't be going on merit, just on his celebrity.

So no.

If any of the England teams were truly picked on merit, Grant Holt would be in the England squad, since he has been the second highest English goalscorer this season, behind Rooney. So I can't really see the UK team being any different.

IMO a resounding YES:

-He's clearly up for it, would be full of enthusiasm for the tournament
-It's not like team GB has any serious long term future so no need to worry about planning for the future, they probably won't play again for 4 years if at all.
-He's a decent player
-Lots of experience, I'm sure the predominantly young squad would benefit from having him around
-On a more cynical level, I think it would help the profile of London 2012 and like it or not I think that is important for British sport in general
-Well liked by the public I can see him geeing up the crowd for the GB games
-Won't put out any English clubs as he plays abroad
