Been Offered Galaxy S to replace Desire - Would You?

A galaxy S + Launcher pro (paid, it's £2 on paypal) is a pretty good combo. All the good sense widgets, all the good hardware from Samsung. If you miss the HTC dialer install Dialer One too. Depending on the type of case (or lack) the backing being made of plastic isn't really an issue to be honest, front of the phone is made decent enough.
 
If I was doing it again I would go with the Desire. The software support from HTC is vastly better than Samsung who don't seem to give a monkeys!

The Desire also felt more robust and the GPS wasn't as flakey. The screen on the Samsung is fantastic to it's credit, but it uses up so much battery I have to use it on low brightness anyway :(
 
Desire is better built, better support, faster updates etc and so on. Galaxy S , love the screen, but build quality is shocking, it really is , and its samsung, big no no for phones of the last few years.
 
I played with both in the Vodafone store in Solihull yesterday for about half an hour. I really couldn't split them.

If I had to choose to live with one, it would have to be the Samsung. The build quality isn't on a level with the Desire (or the iPhone of course), but it's still more than acceptable to me, and the convenience of having 720p video in my pocket at all times is important to me with a kid on the way. It's such a personal decision.

To me, the crux of it is that the software of the Desire can be replicated by the Samsung to an extent, but the hardware of the Samsung (fantastic screen) can of course never be replicated by the Desire.
 
Why would having a kid on the way mean you wanted 720p in your pocket?

Personally I prefer the Desire, I'm a bit of a geek and I like messing around with stuff and there is a far better community for the Desire. The only ever videos I've tried on the Desire have been standard xvid/divx movies using Rockplayer - why would I want any higher quality on a tiny screen? The extra space usage of 720p would be ridiculous.

EDIT: Do you mean 720p video recording?? As Robbo says the Desire has 720p but get a proper camcorder and decent point and shoot camera if you're having a baby. :)

Yeah I meant 720p video recording. We're getting a video camera also, I just mean for the times when we haven't got it with us :).
 
I've just had to make the decision of getting between a desire and SGS.

My mrs has the desire and its great, i love it.

But in the end i chose the samsung. Mainly becuase of the super amoled screen, as from what i understand all desires are slcd now.

To be honest the build quality does not bother me so much as the samsung still feels nice, yes a bit plasticy but i like the slimness and lightness.

I did notice the lag compared to the desire, but once rooted and i applied a one click lag fix all is good and its easily on par if not a little quicker than the desire. Hopefully when samsung pull there finger out and release froyo all these little niggles will be fixed out of the box.

Personally i find the phone a little harder to hold than the samsung due to the extra width, but i'll get used to it.

From a recommendation point of view i'd recommend both and say feel them in your hand and make the choice.
 
On the 'using a mobile phone for babies' front, I must say that the flash on the Desire has been more useful, if we're going anywhere we might need video then the small camcorder or Flip is in the bag anyway. Most videos are rubbish anyway and we've got some decent pics with the Desire. Going from a phone without a flash (3GS) to the Desire has made the biggest difference.

I'm sure you'll be happy with either the Samsung or HTC though.

yeah i do, I find the desire and the galexy a little over kill for me tbh...I m never going to use HD recording anyway.

the only place you can get it from retial seems to be vodaphone. all the rest do heros, ethoir that or your stuck with a wildfire

unless you order one from online...

its a good size phone not too big or small just right
