Been overcharged for petrol

Whelp that’s a new paranoia unlocked.

I fill up at least once a week and just assume that what I pay at the till is what I’m getting charged. Didn’t think it was possible that at some point between the machine and the bank the numbers could end up being wrong.

maybe you had maxed out your card for the day followed by overheld as in paragraph 2 ,from asda website

What happens if I don’t have £99 in my account?

Don’t worry if you don’t have £99 available in your account. With the new approach, your card issuer will tell us the maximum amount you can spend during the pre-authorisation process. This amount will then be the maximum you can spend on fuel, so you’ll never go overdrawn.

How long will the money be held for?

Once the transaction is complete and you’ve finished filling up your car, your card issuer should release any unused money almost immediately. However, it’s been reported that in some instances it may take longer for the amount to reappear on your banking app. If this is the case, we first recommend refreshing your banking app. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, and you’re concerned that the held money isn’t reappearing in your account, you should contact your issuing bank for guidance. They’ll be aware of these changes and will be able to advise you. Asda will only charge you for the value of the fuel.

Is it definitely your card?

I ask because sometimes the previous receipt gets left in the machine, and I've taken it before, to see diesel listed instead of petrol which i put in.

Definitely could be this, has happened to me before but the receipt was for way less than I put in so twigged straight away.

Hi all,
When I say I've been overcharged I don't mean because of high fuel prices I mean it should have cost me what is on the receipt which is £47.37 ( see below ) but it was actually £51.51
and it was at a Asda pay at pump transaction so there is no drinks or sweets to increase the amount.
I'm not sure sure if I can botherered to contact Asda for the £4.14 I've been overcharged but I should really, it just goes to show you really do need to check your receipts which I don't normally do but very now and then I do a MPG test where I put my mileage, amount of fuel and cost per litre into a spreadsheet ( nerdy I know :() and it's only when the total cost came up with a different figure to what I paid I questioned it, I checked my bank and I definitely paid £51.51 last night at the pump.

Anyone else had a simular thing with fuel.

This incident happened a while ago. My pal was telling me how is wife always seems to run her car until the fuel light comes on , then fills it up till the pump cuts out! on this occasion she gets home and says " the fuel prices have gone up it cost me £85 (dont know the actual figure, but that doesn't matter) so he says, "have you got the receipt", takes a look at it and ends up phoning Morrisons in Dukinfield, and telling them the story! to which they replied " fuel prices can fluctuate you know"! to which he said " i understand that but can you tell me how my wife managed to get 60 litres of fuel in a 55 litre fuel tank"? they said ok we'll look into it, a few days later he got a £10 gift voucher from Morrison, he is still waiting for the explination! How many places do this, you would only ever know if you filled your ank from empty!

Might want to put your post text outside of the quote otherwise it can get lost :)

It can happen. My car supposedly has a 52 litre tank but I have put 56 litres in it before. That's obviously cutting it very fine, but it's certainly possible to do on some cars if you push it to the limits. There's lots of explanations for it, ranging from fuel in the filler nozzle to the actual tank capacity being larger to account for temperatures and expansion/contraction. I don't know what the exact reason is, but it's not uncommon.

Yup the fuel tank size as listed IIRC doesn't include things like the fuel filler pipe (it's literally just the minimum internal capacity of the tank), IIRC pretty much every car has a larger fuel capacity than is listed by at least a couple of litres if you fun it until it's empty/very nearly empty then fill until the pump cuts out.
I know every car I've ever driven and filled up from empty/extremely low has taken more than the "tank volume".

In over 20 years of paying for petrol, I paid in cash exactly the amount it said on the pump.

If the amount they say in the store is different then I can challenge it before giving them a penny.

Sometime old fashioned simple ways are safer than just handing over a card for everything.

@moon man post explains what could've happened. Any update on this @dal

It maybe better now but back in Nov I had family members say that sometimes the pre authorised payment could take three to five days or the weekend to go back into the account. How many days has it been?

I'm not sure but think there's quite abit of fuel in the fuel system from the tank to the engine but be careful as I watched online that some modern cars the fuel pump sits in the fuel tank and the fuel helps keep it cool and by runnning it low can put the fuel pump at risk.

Yup

The amount shown on the pump should be what you're charged or what the charge finalises at (as has been said they can precharge the card if pay at pump and then it adjusts), but the whole "pump says it put in more than the listed tank capacity" is a red herring for reasons mentioned.

I'm half expecting there to be something simple as the explanation, for example I have to buy my dad's baccy (he's a pipe smoker* so only two places in town sell it), and I thought the store had double charged me, it turned out the odds and sods I'd bought in the main part of the store ended up costing exactly the same as the baccy so I'd got two identical amounts from the same day about 5 minutes apart on my statements.

*If you ever want to stop someone from starting to smoke, have them live with a somewhat careless pipe smoker for a while:p

May be someone else's amount. Some people are known to take advantage if a lower price appears on the cashier screen than they know they have taken. Always should be queried with your car sat at the pump though.

Imagine the faff though of having to go in each time you've filled up! Pay at pump was the best upgrade to forecourts. I can't say in my 2 decades of driving that I've ever been overcharged at a pay at pump. - mostly because I try and round up to the nearest quid, so I'd definitely notice on my outgoings.

Yeah I did go to Asda customer services with my receipt and after the manager made a few phone calls and about 20 minutes later I got my £4 back but didn't get any sort of compensation.

You'd have to write a written complaint for that.

Most managers of places seem to have 0 power

I bought something in a local Tesco for about £25, I paid contactless and the guy waived me off.

Then I pop in the same branch about 2 weeks later, the manager collars me and claims the payment for what I had bought never went through..
He asks me to check my bank statements so I can confirm they never took payment.

I pop back down about an hour later to pay the monies owed like a good boy.

I got offered a free coffee which I didn't want as I don't drink coffee and stated that, didn't get offered something else for the same value..

Lesson learnt, tell them it's not my fault, its not theft as I had tapped my card and waiting until the person on the till had clearly waived me off...
I literally barely ever went to that Tesco again since as well, just put me off it for some reason, I didn't mind paying up because I'm honest but I didn't get any thanks or anything... literally 0 gratitude even though I went out of my way to pay up as quickly as possible

I'm 100% convinced he would have got fired for even approaching me for payment under those circumstances tbh
