Makes a big difference. If it had no mot and he bought it then he has no come back.
Op needs to take it to another mot centre and get it rechecked and can get the dodgey station done for it.

If its got mot then dont worry. But op needs to take it to another test center to have it verified. He could be worrying over nothing and the car could have been repaired and all good to go.

If there's no risk to you financially, try to go through your credit card provider. Probably the easiest way out if it's successful and as you've apparently accepted defeat and you're happy enough to let it slide, then you'll probably be less stressed than you think. Write the money off in your mind, but go after it anyway.

Used to be an ebay scam
With cars and PayPal
Not that I am advocating scamming him back of course if its even still possible
But when you had the car collected
Was anything signed to state the car had been collected?
They used to do it on ebay
Buy your car on PayPal
Come collect it
All looks kosher
Then soon as they drive away
They do a charge back
Ebay would never help because you couldn't prove the car had been delivered
Probably closed that loophole with PayPal and cars by now
Though no matter what we advise you
PayPal and/or your credit card company are the only peoples
Advice that's really important

The times the scammers tried this with me there was never ever any money involved to be even charged back, only spoof PayPal emails claiming money had been sent and on hold.

If you actually think they send real money, even from a hacked account or stolen card then you are half way to believing the scam yourself.
