Anyone done beer can chicken on their BBQs? If so, what can of beer do you recommend? I've been waiting and waiting for the weather to get the grill out (went away for a while just when the hot weather hit!!) but I'm not sure what beer to use.

In the States they always seem to use Miller or Samuel Adams, though I'm not too sure what British beers equate to that. I can't imagine our lager would work - I don't particularly like drinking stuff like Carling and Carlsberg let alone putting it all over chicken - a draft or bitter might be a bit too darker flavour too.

Any ideas?

Edit:
Just thought, I could just get a can of standard cheap lager and use it as a vessel - then buy some bottles of really nice German weiss beer or Leffe or something! Oh the opportunities!

I haven't barbecued it yet, but have done it many times in the oven. The chicken never tastes of the beer so I've always just used a can of whatevers in the fridge, ales and lager make no difference in my opinion.

Doesn't matter what beer - it will never taste of it anyway. Purpose is just to add moisture or rather prevent the chicken from drying out. Personally, though I like beer can chicken, have always felt it was a bit overrated and that brining is a better way to keep chicken moist.

Love a good beer can chicken, as said above it doesn't matter what type of beer you use as its just there to keep it moist.

I haven't had a barbecue all year so far :( got a Weber arriving tomorrow hopefully so that's going to change! Although its done nothing but rain today and i don't see that changing soon...

Always wanted to try it, only thing that puts me off is thought off the paint on outside of can burning and chemicals/nasty taste going into the chicken

Can you buy a for example a stainless steel beer can just for BBQ cooking?

It's never been an issue for me, no taste or colour. If you're really worried you could always scrub the paint off with a wire brush.

Weber do a poultry holder that allows you to add liquid.

There's a few options like that, some better than others. If you look at the following page you can find one above the weber one that's basically a hollow steel cylinder with a base.

Edit - you might find it cheaper elsewhere I just linked that site as it had the biggest selection.

I always use Newcastle Brown Ale as it's very malty, anything is fine though really. Just avoid bitter. Not a huge amount of flavour goes from the beer into the chicken, so something stronger is better.

Can of proper coke is a good one as well.

Yeah ive used a can of coke before and it works really well, nice slightly sweet taste to the chicken. Will try beer next, some people use fruit juices too.

Weber sell a poultry roaster for BBQs which i use. Same as this one:- http://www.bbqs2u.co.uk/75-weber-style-poultry-roaster-077924074684.html

Good cheesy video of how to use it on that page as well.

I did this the other week in the oven as my current BBQ doesn't have the height.

Did it with a can of cider and then made a glaze with cider, honey, star anise and cinnamon and basted it as it cooked. Was bloody lovely.
