Beers of the World 5 - Round A

The Fear from FD is the only one I'll go back to as I like a darker spiced beer.

Haven't had that one. For me it's Raging Bitch [@mods refers to a dog, I think] - I was going to make that my 'A' beer but the off licence didn't have any this time.

FD do a strong stout which I want to try too, can't remember the name.

I don't think I've had a stout from them, as they pretty much nail the spices in The Fear (for my taste) I imagine any spiced stout from them would be good too.

I used to drink a lot of Raging Bitch back in the day when I first got into beer, but as said I don't see it much anymore.

The Fear looks awesome, just checked it out. Will get one if I see it at my local.

The other I was thinking of is an imperial porter called Gonzo which is 10%. I imagine that's decent too.

Ah I think I have had Gonzo actually, we had it on at the bar I used to work at in the US. We tried every beer we had on tap so with 35 taps over 2 years they quickly added up.

Got this in the fridge for tonight, if you like Stouts and especially with a bit of spice, this is probably the best available in the UK. £20 a bottle but it's worth it for 10.5% and 750ml bottle. I don't have this beer very often but weirdly I believe it was my USA entry for the last BOTW I took part in.

This week's is paired with Fleetwood Mac - Rumours. Haven't opened it yet, will be this evening. Very interested to see what it's like!

With the Untappd rating bonus, did someone get upped from a 5 to a 6 or did nobody get that bonus this week? Edit: Re-read, I see that's just for next week.

Is that Cloudwater? They do a DDH which is amazing.
I hope not or I wouldn't have got any point for this round :p

Very similar beer to what Cloudwater produce though and up to a similar standard. Unfortunately it was a couple of months old on arrival which was a shame - DDH beers need to be super fresh to be enjoyed at their best.

A bit of a boring choice from me. I ran out of time to order anything online and there's no beer shops near me so I'm limited to supermarkets/off licences.

Although, in the spirit of the competition, it is something new to me that I've not tried before. Not a bad beer actually but I probably wouldn't buy it again. There's UK made IPAs which a like better and are cheaper (probably because of the cost of shipping the american stuff over here).

It's a session ale AND made in the USA! It's going to be boring!

So mine was very sour, very punchy on the tongue. Can't say I could taste Chardonnay particularly other than the fizz/sour. Not one for me but wasn't completely disagreeable, one more to sip than session.

Here are the Untappd ratings (as they stood yesterday)

Bickaxe 3.87 Peanut Butter Milk Stout
Sonea Fifer 3.40 Longboard Island Lager
Executive Beef 3.85 Florida Man
Weringo 4.43 DDH Mylar Bags
Mike the Native 3.52 Big Wave
Martynt74 3.71 Thick Haze
Repta 3.75 Pale Ale – Draught Style
Charlie Bravo 4.18 Softly Spoken Magic Spells
Russinating 4.14 Fated Farmer: Chardonnay
Touch 3.48 California IPA
Lysander 3.67 Trappist Ale
Ahleckz 3.70 Stranger Than Fiction

I do like DDH IPA's so might see if I can get that Mylar Bags at some point.

Depending on your bottle shop you'll be paying around a tenner and as previously said, these Other Half beers are quite old by the time they get here. Still better than a lot of UK offerings but won't be tasting quite as good as it could be.

I have a friend in New Jersey that sends me boxes of Other Half and it works out about £5 a can with shipping and are usually about 4 days old, £10 for a couple month old IPA of this style is a bit mad really, but understandable with how it is transported.

Here's my beer pic too

Also, i know that Sierra Nevada Californian IPA has been around a while now, but i've seen a lot of UK breweries popping up recently with a "Californian IPA". I had one from Rivington the other day. Seems like it's the current "in" style.

IPA was very much THE hipster beer of the 2010s. It pretty much defined the beer market and male hipster culture [in London, anyway]. I wonder what the in-style of the 2020s will be. It's a little early to say, since each decade takes 2-3 years to cement its own identity.

Oh definitely, it's just quite funny as it seems that Californian IPA seems to be the current in style, whereas the last year or so i'd say it's definitely been the New England style. Which has worked brilliantly as it's probably my favourite style versus the more bitter west coast style.
