Beginner Guitar + Amp

If your going for a Strat then this one's better in my opinion, both looks and sound wise:

It lacks a humbucker which is reccomended for the genres he will be playing, it would also be less versatile because of this.

The Vypyr is a better amp than the cube. Get it.

With regards to the guitar you'd do yourself a favor by getting a humbucker (2 pickups connected) pickup in the bridge position (closest pickup to the bridge)

Here is an example

I also recommend a guitar with a fixed bridge so you change strings easier.

+1 to the above really.

1+ for the Roland Cube it's a bit more than £40 quid but it's a great lttle amp.

I wouldn't spend the earth on a guitar yet as you might not carry on play. I started out with a second hand fender copy made by encore. It was fine for what I needed it for. Have you thought about buying a second hand one?

Why get a cube when you can get a vypyr though? Especially if he wants to play metal.

If it was me I'd up the budget and get a blackstar HT-5 (all tube) but that's me....

As a begginner, it is better to get an axe that will hack all sorts of styles of music rather than a one trick pony, so I would automatically cross out all 'metal guitars' from your list.

As always, you really cannot go wrong with a Yamaha Pacifica, it really is a solid guitar and whomps all guitars in its price range and beyond. As a brucey bonus, it has a humbucker (the 'fat' looking pickup) which will sound great for rock music.

Also, the roland cube is a solid all rounder amp to boot.
