Beginner's RTS

I've never been a massive RTS fan, but I did really enjoy Rise of Nations and Homeworld Cataclysm. Great games.

Concerning Starcraft II: Agreed, generally, but I do think it's possible that a buyer could find things confusing and irritating that beta testers have been able to get accustomed to over a long period of time.

Don't get me wrong, I'll certainly be buying this as well, but I think it's a possibility that it might be the wrong recommendation for someone who's looking for a gradual introduction to RTS games.

What ever you decide, once you are more confident in your RTS abilities, play Men Of War!

id say dawn of war 2, you only have a few units at a time and it really helps to teach you when and how to use them

Company of Heroes is quite a lot of micro managing. An amazing game though!

Command and Conquer:Generals and Zero hour are brilliant for beginners.
Their 'modern' with China vs GLA (Global Liberation Army...terrorists basicly) vs USA

And when you're up for the challenge, Hearts of Iron 3

RUSE is quite slow paced, doesnt matter if you make a few mistakes because you can easily sort them out.

also check out world in conflict, your units respawn infinitively so you can keep trying new strategies and see what sticks.

Another vote for Warcraft III, will introduce you nicely to the main concepts of macro/micro management, aswell as having a pretty awesome story line to boot.

ZH is good for the single player side of it but i wouldnt recomend it for a beginner online.To many bugs and glitches.But it is still my favourite RTS.

I would say get C&C first decade it can be had for like £15 and has a good few games that will provide hours of fun

So you play gal civ 2 then Davies_m .If you do its a great game.My favourite 4X game by far.I always go back to it for hours/days then weeks of fun.lol

Errrm, I will probably get flogged naked through the streets of London for suggesting this, but what about Supreme Commander 2?

It is a horrific destruction of it's predecessor, but at least it's more accessible, and the number of units you can/need to build does get you used to managing mixed forces

Just to let you know COH and DOW2 both don't have base building i think? (I have bought both but have not had time to give them a proper play). These are both highly regarded games however. To start off I would probably pick up an older RTS game like C&C Red Alert, which i found balanced and well paced.

CoH has base building, nowhere near as much as C&C though and DoW2 only has base building in multiplayer.

Actually Company of Heroes looks ideal...WW2 would be perfect (when I said modern I meant not swords-and-sorcery kind of thing). Hopefully it'll break me in gently.

id say, its awesome but online very harsh and unforgiving.

its not about building a base, although you do have to build some base structures or tech up.

personally im a huge ww2 'fan' i love what COH brings. is not a real time replica of the second world war by any means, but the depth and feelings the game can inspire for me nothing can match. the bonus is that it can be bought for under £10 (get tales of valour, it includes all 4 factions for online play but maybe skips some of the single player campaigns). it is that good that after nearly 3 years i have still not played any other pc game as i cannot pull myself away from COH...
