Being Diagnosed with ADHD (not medical thread)

I tried methylphenidate after my diagnosis in 2021. It helped somewhat but I didn't enjoy the side effects - just a bit more high strung and anxious, even snappy or irritable. It had tradeoffs but ultimately the side effects were middling and the benefits were small to medium, so I stopped after a year. I tried lisdexamphetamine maybe last year and felt very similar so I stopped that much faster.

Right now though I am tempted to start again as work is so very busy and I'm really struggling. The issue is that when my remaining supplies run out I'm not engaged with the prescribers to get more.
Not sure if you're aware but there's a worldwide shortage of some ADHD meds, afaik lisdexamfetamine is 1 of the worse affected.

Yes that was just starting to happen as I stopped taking it. In fact I was really frustrated having to chase my doctor and go back and forth between them and the pharmacy to get replacement scripts. That put me off the whole process.

I've been pretty lucky tbh, i've never gone w/o due to the shortage unlike many. I have had to travel upto 60 miles to pick up a script but the last 3 months worth of meds my local pharmacy has had them in. I keep expecting my luck to run out though.

Just found this thread and thought I'd jump in. I've was diagnosed 2 months ago as having combined type ADHD - went private with ADHD360 for the assessment and treatment as the NHS has massive waiting lists.

Currently going through titration with Concerta XL - started on 18mg week one, now on 36mg week two (and next week) with an assessment next week.

Not convinced it's doing much mentally, but I've noticed an increased heart rate, change in appetite and possibly improved sleep. Made the mistake of drinking caffeine with it on Monday - won't make that mistake again, I was very overstimulated and it wasn't nice.

Hoping those symptom settle down as I get used to the compound and anticipating a bump to 54mg with hopefully some actual boost to focus.

Be careful with private assessments. They push people through and on to drugs who don't really have it. Unlike the NHS they are profit driven and that's why there is now a drug shortage.

But if you take these drugs without really needing them it weirdly has the opposite effect.

There's scant evidence for that. The BBC documentary on the subject has been thoroughly criticised for poor journalism.

I was assessed by a very well qualified mental health practitioner and they wrote direct to my GP to keep them in the loop.

They didn't push me on to drugs at all. I made it quite clear I needed time to think about it and went back to them when I felt I was ready to explore that route and when you complete Titration they move you onto shared care with your GP so your medication comes from the NHS - meaning they make no money from the meds.

The drug shortage isn't down to private companies over diagnosing, it's down to global supply chain issues and is already easing up this month.

Still waiting for titration myself, diagnosed back in February, not expected to receive medication until August/September, I went through Psychiatry-UK based in Cornwall, through the NHS right to choose scheme.
