Belgium Grand Prix 2011, Spa Circuit - Race 12/19

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Hamilton get a slap on the wrist for that, he had no reason to dart across the right as Maldonado started to overtake.

This is how I saw it.

For me, it looked like both drivers are to blame. I don't understand why Maldo is the guy getting all the flack, when if you look at the footage, you will see it is actually Hamilton who turns (right), into Maldo.

Am I missing something here?

Yes, watching the replay, Hamilton did move across slightly when he didn't need to. Doesn't justify Maldonado's actionts though!

He was following the natural line and swerved left when he saw maldonardo dive out alongside him. Maldonardo was passing him, he knew he was there, he swerved at him deliberately. In an open wheel car that is so dangerous it deserves a hefty penalty.

Who cares they all do it, the way this lot drive you can move over on someone until they run out of track. This is what happens when drivers stand their ground when a car moves over. More of them need to do it.

They move over and hope the other car jumps out the way. Hamilton Webber Vettel they all do it.

For that to be the case, Hamilton would have to have seriously neglected his mirrors.

Maldonado had already pulled out to go past when Hamilton darted across at him.

They were both as bad as each other as far as I see it.

the replay? :p

no footy on :/ nowt to do all day now.

Mal does the swerving and on a cool down lap. hammy does move right slightly, not much and is also the one with the reactions and swerves away once he realises.

Watch the replays again.

This wasn't during a race or during qualifying, it was after the flag. There was absolutely no reason for Maldo to be doing anything anywhere near Lewis. Lewis took an entirely reasonably line round and Maldo drove into him.

Maldonado was clearly the aggressor and pulled alongside and moved over. He will be penalised I have no doubt.

Not at all, Maldonardo hit Hamilton twice, at worst Hamilton made a slight weave at Maldontardo. Deliberately driving into him is inexcusable, no way can it be justified and be equally to blame.

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton on the Maldonado incident:

"I'll have to look at it. The Williams was just sitting there, it was very slow. I had to try and get past, which I did. I saw Maldonado approaching quite quickly - he happened to swipe across me. My front wing was quite damaged. I'll sit here and wait for the stewards to call me up rather than going back to McLaren. Once the flag was out and the red light was on there is no need to be racing. There should never be an incident but unfortunately there was."

I couldn't believe what I was seeing when it happened. Maldonado obviously felt aggrieved at what happened into the chicane, but it looked like Mal was going in the pits.. Lewis was on his hot lap..

What I think has happened here, start to finish is that Hamilton was a bit annoyed that Maldonado gave him no room at all around the last corner (be it maliciously or incompetently).

After turning the hairpin, Maldonado moves to pass Hamilton and Hamilton, a bit annoyed by the previous move jinks out and back in quickly to try and put the willies up Maldonado a bit.

Maldonado takes exception to this and goes to return the favour however hugely misjudges how Hamilton proceeds to follow the racing line and so rather than just jinking towards him as Hamilton did, he ends up clattering into the side of him and causing the accident.

I think both of them were behaving irresponsibly though I think Maldonado should get the lion's share of the punishment as not only did he start the shenanigans by giving Hamilton no room on the last turn, he was also the one who was incompetent enough at trying to scare another driver that he actually caused an accident doing it.

Session was red flagged and they have more important sport to show. Posh boys playing a ruffians sport with squashed balls. ;)

Actually, it's Rugby LEAGUE, so it really is just a bunch of northern thugs pulling balls from between each others legs.
</Union fan>

Anyway, Maldo better be seeing a pretty stiff penality for that. It's all very well saying it's much of a muchness, but what if he'd clipped Hamilton with a fraction of more force and put him straight into the fence? Be pretty annoyed to see him get a start tomorrow to be honest, much less the rest of the season.

Lol people actually blaming Lewis for Maldo swerving into him?

The thing is, the curvature of the track makes it look like Lewis is being aggressive towards Maldonado from both camera angles. Effectively though, Maldonado holds a straight line and Lewis drives into the side of him.

Just remember, the stewards have a lot more information than we do, including different camera angles, and car telemetry data that will help them determine the real fault of the incident, and all that we can do until then, is make guesses..

My money is on the fact that it was a sliver of carbon fibre from Schuey's car, lodged in the steering rack of maldobumpercardo's car, that caused the collision and ultimately the blame lies with the manufacturer of the wheelnut that didn't fit properly
