Im trying to replace our old antiquated router in our house with a slightly more up to date router that doesnt crash every time you try and play CSS!

Now the new router is without power adapter but is the same manufacturer so i figured it wouldnt matter if i just used the same adapter.

So i plugged everything in and it wont work, all the lights flash etc but I cannot connect to the internet.
I get that annoying "limited or no connectivity" icon in my task bar and when i try to release/ renew my ip address it tells me that its
"unable to connect to DHCP server".

The only thing I can fathom from examining the routers is that the old router says "2.4 A" above the power socket and the new one says "2.5 A".
Would this stop it from working?

The new router is a:

Belkin 4 - Port Cable/DSL Gateway router. model no # F5D5231 - 4.

I apologise for the ignorance but how do I manually set an IP address?

On the actual Adapter it says nothing. On both routers it says 5V.

Nope. nothing at all. just that stoopid limited connectivity icon!

Control Panel, Network Connections, Properties, TCP/IP, properties, fill in the boxes - IP in the same subnet as the router (ie if the router's using 192.168.1.1, you use eg 192.168.1.20), subnet mask 255.255.255.0, default gateway as the router's IP (you'll need to RTFM for the router to find out what IP it's using) - and you're done.

Limited connectivity just means didn't get an answer from a DHCP server. If the modem was knackered would have expected interface not connected.

I manually set an IP address but it did nothing but remove the limited or no connectivity icon from the task bar. (I didnt enter anything into the boxes for the DNS server??)

I was still not able to connect to the router at all.

You have run the installation disk that came with it havn't you? It does configuration and connection installation to your computer

Shouldn't be needed, though anything's possible with Belkin crud.

Can you ping the router's IP?

Seconded.

When i set an ip address i tried accessing the router through my web browser and it found nothing so surely pinging it wont work? Ill give it a go though.

Getting nothing out of one doesn't mean the other won't work..

Ok tried pinging the router it says it cannot reach it.

Maybe i had better tell you my setup. : cable modem > router > switch.

I tried cutting out the switch but it said my cable was unplugged :confused:does that mean the router is borked or could it just be down to the incorrect power supply?

This task wouldnt be so hard if i didnt have to go up and down 3 flights of stairs every time i go and change the router round! lol

just think in the time you've spent arsing about with this one you could have washed windows or cars and earned enough cash to buy a linksys or a netgear which would work first time :) :p

LOL. I am but an impoverished student and cant be arsed to clean peoples windows! :D

I am going to buy a gaming router but i want to play CSS NOW!

Doh. oh well no games for me then! At least I got some excercise running up and down the stairs. lol

Bring the router close to the computer your testing it on. Wire it in and sort out access and configuration, move it back only when you know it is working (unless you need the excercise!)
