Benedict Cumberbatch OUTRAGE!!!

If someone called me racist over that remark id tell them to grow up.

Welcome to the world we live in.

'Coloured' was never considered an insult. In fact, it was preferred over the term 'black' not too long ago. Now it appears 'black' is preferred over 'coloured'

Also very much varies where you are from. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but colored is perfectly acceptable in America, whilst over here (UK) it is a big no no.

Just refer to people by their correct Pantone chart number and everyone will be happy.

That's logical...so it wouldn't work.

To a large extent, it's about people looking for an excuse to be, or more accurately claim to be, offended so they have an excuse for harming other people. So it doesn't matter what words you use, any more than it matters whether or not you actually were "looking funny" at some thug who wants to kick off.

For example, they could "be offended" at your suggestion because they'd claim it's a way of dividing "minorities" so that the "majority" can oppress them more easily.

Like they're "offended" at my preferred option, namely that we stop pretending that the colour of a person's skin is of such enormous importance that it defines them. That's a denial of racism, don't ya know?

I'm in my 30's and while I can't speak for everyone, when I was in school the term 'coloured' was the accepted term and 'black' was offensive. I can imagine certain generations blurting out the wrong word occasionally.

yea I already postd that and asked how we are supposed to know what is acceptable to the pc brigade when no one talks about it.
maybe if I had racist friends I would know what the least offensive words were.

personally I treat everyone as human regardless of their skin colour or ridiculous suntan. branding people or putting people into groups based on skin colour isn't something I ever consider.
people might claim it's out of touch why the hell would I want to be in touch with racism?

It only exists because people cry about it all the time every little innocent remark where possible will be taken as racist!!! linch him!!!
it's like a self-perpetuating issue, fed by the "offended so you won't have to be idiots"

All thanks to social media. Witch hunt for everything nowadays.

I need to feel I have saved all black people from oppression by being outraged at a word on their behalf, because that is what liberal white people do best.

I'm going to set up a Facebook page and if if gets one million likes then we will have racial equality on the Internet, who is with me?!!!

I did check with a feminazi and this weeks PC term is "people of colour"

If I were black I'd shove that patronising term up their ass, stupid white liberals.

Stupid PC brigade.

I find being called white offensive.

I'm nowhere near white. I rested my hand on a piece of tesco A4 white paper and could still see it.

Maybe we should adopt

IC1 – White European
IC2 – Dark European
IC3 – Afro-Caribbean
IC4 – Asian (in the British sense - ie Indian, Bangladeshi or Pakistani)
IC5 – Oriental
IC6 – Arab/North African
IC0 – Unknown ethnicity
Some forces use IC7 as unknown ethnicity.

The whole thing is just racism in it self, the quicker we stop getting offended on other peoples behalfs the quicker racism won't exist as much as it does.

Worth remembering he was in USA, where "African American" is the preferred term, with "black" not being wholly accepted. But "African American" is of little use when discussing Black-British actors, as he was.

US media described Lewis Hamilton as the first African-American F1 champion a few years ago.

If you want a laugh google the various discussions online as to whether Charlize Theron is African-American.

This kind of thing drives me crazy. As I'm now getting older, getting more forgetful of now what is the correct term to use. On many occasion at work, I have to pause mid conversation and work out whether I need to refer to person X or Y as Asian, Black, etc. At times I unknowingly used the term "coloured" thinking you weren't allowed to say "Black". TBH the guy I was speaking with wasn't phased or bothered at all, he knew I wasn't being offensive....but the white people were like "ooh you can't say that anymore"

likewise.....As a new starter myself at the time...in the same office is an Asian lady.....who everyone has worked with for several years. I asked about curious to what country she was originally from....and not a single person had known.....as if no one had dared to ask.......people being shy from talking about anything in case they dare offend is crazy

that's the problem with silly terms like 'African American'

leads to silly situations like this:

Ad features black people from the Caribbean and an Aussie.

TYT call it racist because there is a stereotype in the US about 'African Americans' and fried chicken... yet since they're dumb enough to refer to all black people, including non-Americans, as 'African American' and think an American stereotype about black people in America applies to all black people - therefore the advert is racist, whereas the only racism is their own racial assumptions.
