Hi,

I have never used a M.2 drive before so if someone could be kind enough to help.

As in the title what would be the best 1T M.2 Boot drive for an Asus ROG Maximus Z690 Extreme - Intel Z690 DDR5 EATX Motherboard.

Thanks.

samsung 980 pro
or
wd black sn 850

(i use the wd black)

edit: if you want the best and price is of no concern then seagate firecuda 530 or corsair mp600 pro xt

The Adata S70 Gammix Blade 1Tb is one of the fastest M2 drives around and can be had for £115 if you look around. Like most gen 4 drives the controller can get very hot so use your motherboards M2 heatsinks and not the thin one it comes with.

I got the WD SN850 with heatsink, has an RGB light on it too if that's your thing.
Tested this morning after a firmware update.

Corsair MP600 PRO XT is solid too, as is the Seagte Firecuda 530.

There's so little real world difference I'd just get the cheapest.

It's either of those two I'd go for.

I went for the Corsair as the Firecuda 530 was out of stock at the time.

I did own the 980 Pro at the time and had a few issues with slow write speeds over time. Not sure if that was ever fixed with a firmware update.

Thanks everyone.

I went for the Samsung 980 pro in the end.:)

I'll learn to read every post in a thread before posting lol

Am I right in thinking that a M.2 drive does not work if there is an ordinary SSD attached by Sata?

No that's not right normally. You can have SATA and NVME drives in the same system.

There are some edge cases where SATA and M2 drives share PCIE lanes and only one will work when used. I can't see that mentioned in the manual for your board.

As suggested above, it will say in the manual. Usually it only disables one SATA port. Z690 has lots of bandwidth / PCI-E lanes spare, so not really an issue there.

I updated the BIOS to the latest version and the drive is now available to boot from but still does not show in Win 11.

I will try doing a Windows install on the drive instead and see if that cures the problem.

It isn't present in disk manager? A quick google shows quick a few common issues with getting them working. The most often one seems to be disabling aspm.

That solved it.

I ran disk manager and initialised the drive, problem sorted.

I have not used disk manager before as I have always formatted/setup disks in other ways.

Thanks guys.:)
