Best A/V connection for PS3?

Hi

Just got a ps3 this Monday and was wondering what the best connection overall for game playing/vieving streaming content/watching blu-ray dvds was?

I've read up a bit and it seems that 1080p is only possible through VGA? Although this doesn't effect me since I have a 1080i max Samsung which I don't see myself replacing for a while yet. Currently I have the optical out from the PS3 to my amp for sound, and using a HDMI cable (~1 year old) for the video.

Is there a better combination than this? If not, is it worth me buying a better HDMI cable rather than using the one I got with my old DVD player that is now redundant?

Thanks

What about for sound? Wouldn't a seperate optical cable into my amp be as good as HDMI?

Surely having:

Optical out from PS3 -> amplifier -> speakers

is better than:

HDMI connected to TV -> Red/white sound cables going into AMP from tv > speakers.
(unless those red/white cables carry the 5.1 sound to amp as an optical cable would?)

Just read the other thread regarding HDMI cables too.. guess I'll buy a mid-range one since they're considered all the same.

Thanks

I'd use a separate optical cable, in that example.

Well what I use is HDMI for the Video, and a Component cable for the Audio to my 2.1 Speakers. If you've got an Amp that accepts an optical connection you'd be better using that for the sound.

I use HDMI for video, and optical for audio. On short isolated sounds there is sometimes a little bit of dropoff, but nothing major. You won't be able to play SACDs over optical due to no HDCP, but I'll assume you've a 40gb PS3 anyway.

The best solution overall is to use an HDCP/HDMI amp, but they cost a fortune. However this is the only way to get your full money's worth out of the audio capabilities of Blu-Ray. Last time I looked (which was probably 6 months ago) they started at about £800...

HDMI has more than enough data throughput for EVERYTHING!

/edit - seems a half decent one can be had sub 300 now!

Thanks for the replies all. Will stick with current setup then. Apopcalyptic I'll keep that in mind for the next time I upgrade everything :p - I'm not a huge movie buff/audiophile but I do want the best possible with my current setup :D

If you want the best audio quality from bluray discs the ps3 must be set to output pcm audio over hdmi.

Select uncompressed pcm while watching Bluray playback

No good over either of the options he's considering. Optical is not HDCP, so it will automatically resort to the lower quality option. If you try to output through the TV audio out, the disc may refuse to play due to no HDCP. I experimented a few months ago, to no joy myself. Even if either method COULD output the audio, neither has enough bandwidth to benefit.

Unless of course you meant for him to use his TV's speakers? Again, a complete waste of time as integrated speakers (not to mention the amp) just don't have the range or capability to see (or hear!) any benefit.

well i use the above method connecting my PS3 to a sony DG910 Amp via HDMI and it gives me PCM ,

With the OP mentioning he was connecting through an amp then i pressumed he would also benefit, but i have no idea what equipment he is using

Yeah, you're using an HDMI amp, the OP already said he isn't! It's all there in his posts!

Linear PCM is only available over HDMI.
